I tend to have a horribly wandering mind. I can focus for short spurts, but generally i am on sensory overload.
Recently i have tried something that really helps me. When i shoot i wear headphones or earplugs. For whatever reason shutting down my hearing keeps me really focused on the arrow, my muscles and the target. Im just much more in the moment.
Maybe im nuts, i can accept that, but hey it doesnt cost anything to try!! Give it a shot and see how it works for you!

Makes sense to me.
Dampening one sensory input shifts focus from it to the others.
Headphones, with music playing would distract me, but ear plugs might do the trick.
I'm gonna have to try it. :-)

It's not weird, and it works. I stumbled in this a while back by accident. I shot after cutting the lawn and hadn't removed my ear plugs.
You really get a "feel" for the bow because there is little noise at the shot.
AND you eliminate some of the distractions that you normally hear. Rick's comment, "Dampening one sensory input shifts focus from it to the others." is spot on.
Thanks for reminding me as I had forgotten about this.

Lol Andy Man...sorry to hear that tho.
Briar, you ain't nuts! I can see where that can help for sure but that's a bit of a crutch eh? With dogs chasing around, kids playing, chickens clucking at me because one of my targets was near their pen...barn cats running around, horses whinnying (laughing) at my poor shots. How's a dude expected to hit the mark....? Well ya gotta tune that all out. :)
Alright, I embellished a bit.. but all that above has happened to me to some degree...yep.:)
Focus...supreme focus when it counts.

My Grandfather later in life could barely hear it thunder, yet he took two dear every year and would have been more if they had raised the limit.
I have tinnitus really bad so it's never quiet where I live. I play white noise at night to cancel it out to sleep. I have shot my bow with white noise on headphones and it might have helped. It sure drowned out the Crickets and Cicadas that I hear all the time.
What you have is an overload of internal dialogue, give meditation a shot for a month or so and see if that helps.

I can shoot as good as ever with my 3-D companions blabbering away in the background. Just learn to deal with it.

Sure explains a lot.

Makes a lot of sense - other exercises that require total focus can be benefited by cutting out auditory stimuli. If it works go for it. JW

Wandering eyes at the last second in my case I believe is due to the floaters I acquired when I had my cataracts removed. Yes, I will agree noisy shooting buddies don’t help either or the ringing in my ears. But, lately we have been shooting indoors and I have been really concentrating on picking a spot. That has helped me block out noise and not see the floaters. An’it getting old a bit..
