I've been in Archery since 1949. Shot my first tournament 1950. Doug Easton gave me two dozen 24srtx shafts that Harry Bitzenburger crested and fletched for me. ALL FREE OF COST so I could promote the new shafts. Howard Hill taught me the basics of instinctive shooting. I won many tournaments. Howard participated in a lot of the Sports vacation and travel shows. One of his big tricks was to throw a golf ball in the trout ponds and then shoot them with his very pointy broads. Try that. it's hard but he did it. This is wordy but it's just to show that I've been in archery for a long time. I operated several Archey shops in southern Cal where I made thousands of arrows. The TV show "The American Sportsman" featured different personalities' was contacted to make four dozen bright fluorescent painted arrows for some upcoming shows that featured TV stars. I also knew Lyle Shannon very well. He is the one that started the saying--Don't say bow -say SABO bow I helped him make SABO bows in Westminster. I Got the first Pack King with the long limbs 64#. Harry Drake--the great flight bow maker gave Lyle many tips on making the very tapered laminates so the bows didn't stack. SABO bows were known for being very smooth. Lyle helped me develop the "Chucker" "Stick recurve" which we sold many, many of them. I miss his jokes.

Do you happen to still have any of Lyle's Black Arrow Striker bows? That is one of the fastest bows I've ever shot.

Pretty slim Southern California crowd to draw from for that era.

For you acquainted with Frank Garske or Alton Safford? I would love to hear some stories.

Question of the day: How do you start a thread on this forum without being registered? Can you actually skip adding your name?

This should be interesting.

You can leave off your name.

But not a handle from what I can tell.

It might even be interesting to start a separate post on that?

I was in So Cal from 69-72 and bought a Pac King from Lyle out of Don Browns Black Arrow archery shop in Riverside. It was for my wife so it was 44# but it shot great.

Lyle Shannon also had his own shop in Westminster, CA called Black Arrow. Actually he had 2 locations, at different times, in that city. There was also an address in Westminster for SABO Archery Corporation. It's an industrial building. So, it appears the company was renamed but stayed in the same city.

In 1975 I bought a SABO Pac-King from Arrow Manufacturing in Costa Mesa, CA. In 1977 I went directly to Lyle for an extra set of limbs. I still have the bow and limbs.

Don Brown had his shop in the garage of his parent's house in Riverside. He named it Don Brown Traditional Archery Productions. Out of curiosity, some time in the 1980's I took a ride out there to see if it was really a private residence. It was.

I don't have any reference to Don using the name Black Arrow for his shop.

Ugly Coyote, We have probably crossed paths. I think I spent all my spare money at Arrow Manufacturing when I was a kid. There happens to be a guy selling some of his arrows that he bought there many years ago on our classifieds. He's a neighbor of mine and I told him he should advertise him on his forum because he had them in our local Craigslist ads.

This is a bow to Lyle used to build for my friends archery shop. Call The Black Arrow Striker. Fastest Dacron bow I've ever tested.

Years ago I bought my wife a bow from Flea bay.Bad pictures .All cammo rattle can cammo job.Could not tell what bow it was.Looked as if it could been a Martin hunter. It arrived in Australia and after the cammo paint was removed it revealed it's true identity,It turned out to be a 62" 47# Sabo hunter with what looks to be a Rosewood riser. This is the best performing bow in our family.I did at one stage chrono it and got 200 +fps.I just can't remember what weight arrow I used.My other bows range from 175 fps to 190fps.Yes Sabo bows are indeed smooth and flat shooting. One hell of a bow and could give a lot of newer bows a good run for their money. All I need is a lefty for me.great bows Osr
