I’m looking to back 3 older bows from antique shop. More insurance than anything else. .I’ve seen fake snake, but if a cotton T-shirt will work I’m all over that.

Like white on rice!

Like a duck after a June bug!

You get the idea!!!LOL

What inexpensive and easy to use stuff have you tried?

Thanks Arrowchucker

Silk, Linen, Jute, Flax, lots of things will work. Depends on how much protection you think they need.

Raw hide, sinew, & bamboo are old standbys. Ken.

Oh, fake snake skin is usually like decals, printed on paper. I think there are some now that are cloth but I haven't seen them. >>>----> Ken

I used the cloth from 3 rivers, fooled most people. Looked extremely real.

I have used the cloth ones from 3Rivers on a couple of bows. Work well and look good.

These are the artificial copperhead skins, they are printed on cloth strips that I think are 2”x72”

I saw something once, dont know if it was here or not, a guy used 2 or 3 layers of brown grocery bag, laminated on. It worked well as I recall.

Faux has some nice print cloth snake skins to pick from, but for looks nothing beats the real thing, but to expensive for every day use.

Snake and fake snake are not for insurance purposes.

I’m trying to remember if Dire Wolf didn’t recommend Tyvek… I think it can be epoxied on, and if there’s anything that’s going to resist linear disruption, I would think that that would be it…

I’ve done three bows with the 3 Rivers cloth ones. They look very real especially from a distance.

Bowyers who use hide glue sinew backing use snake skins quite often, and tb 3 to apply the skin to help protect against moisture, and for looks, and then apply a good finish.

Old tee be fine. What was used on the old lemon bows ? Somthing like thick paper.?

The paper backing on old bows was vulcanized fiber which you can still buy today. Essentially it is paper rawhide.

dire wolf did talk about Tyvek but apparently the only thing that bonds it reliably is actually Hide Glue, not epoxy.

I make snakey bows can you follow a snakey bow that moves side to side 3" or does the bow need to be pretty straight? I've never tried it but it's getting harder all the time.

I have seen some radical snake bows. Most follow the grain, and line up the tips with the middle of the handle to get a snakey bow that turns out to make a bow. I have made a few from Osage, and black locust, but not as radical as 3 inches side to side. Some very good bowyers claim that they don,t shoot as good as a straight limbed bow, but they sure are a conversation piece.
