My neighbor was cutting a couple small elm trees so I snatched them up.

New stave day is a work day, but also a happy day full of optimism. Congrats.

Nice! I'm down to one Osage stave and some fresh cut ironwood and mulberry in the stash. Trying to talk a buddy into letting me cut an elm in his yard ;)

Have you ever used elm Jeff? Just wondering how you liked it if you did.

Elm is right on top of the best white woods. Interlocking grain, takes heat well, and tough as nails. As in all wood some elm is better for bow making than others even within the same species.

Yeah i have, but its been years ago. Elm is ok bow wood. A few years ago I cut a big one and put up many staves from it. While they were still green I reduced them in size, steamed them and clamped them on a reflex caul for a few days. They should be plenty dry and ready to go now.

As far as white woods go, I like hophornbeam better than elm, but elm makes a good bow too.

Nice...I did the same last winter, although I cut mine into square lumber to be sawn into lams.

I still make a number of laminated glass bows, but more and more I'm gravitating to preferring a simple self bow.

Nothing like finding a good piece of wood, and working it down with a draw knife, and carefully tillering it into a nice shooting bow.

No power tools, no glue, no glass...simple as it gets.

Elms good bow wood, I use it a lot...but I'm itching to make another self bow, probably end up using hickory, because I have a lot of it.
