I lost my best friend yesterday to cancer. He went with me on every roving trip and sat by me while I practiced. One time he put himself between me and a sow bear with cubs that I walked up on by accident and I suspect things would have gone badly had he not defended me so strongly. He was always what a true friend is, loyal, kind, and always understanding of my faults even when we disagreed on the path we were on. I made and shot a special arrow yesterday evening out over the mountains and creek he so dearly loved. It disappeared into the sunset and like him I hope it flies forever into a place that is better. Yes, many might say Tip was just a dog, a 125 pound Labrador to be exact but to me he was simply my best friend. R.I.P. sweet boy.

Like my cowboy father said: Never trust a drunk, or a man who doesn’t drink. And stay away from anybody who doesn’t like a dog.

I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like, and I’ve had a bunch of them. I have buried them in Kentucky and Kansas and Utah and most of them In the sandy soil down by the river in Idaho. I enjoyed them all. They were my friends. My companions, protectors of the children, and heroes when they needed to be. All are missed but remembered.

And Darryl. I suspect your Tip will meet up with my Ginger and Belles and Butch and Pony and Jude and many others as they patiently wait for another walk when we join them.

They will never be forgotten.

such a sick feeling when they go

DOGS in HEAVEN

Lets see: There are horses in heaven - Revelations19:11 Then I saw Heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And the animals know the Lord - Revelation 5:8-13 All creatures recognize Jesus as the Savior of the world and praise God right along with redeemed men. Romans 8:19 (KJV) The lesser creatures await Christ's return to redeem the sons of God so they, too, will be released from physical death to eternal life. And, after all, they are born without original sin.

a new puppy is the only thing that helps with me

I feel and felt your pain many times. It's the price we must pay to have them be such a cherished, invaluable part of our lives. But they're MORE than worth it!

I would walk right up to heaven

Oh, yes, since Heaven is the place where nothing bad or evil can exist, then CERTAINLY there are the animals we love. I look forward to seeing my friends there. Also the scriptures say that at a certain specific point God Himself will wipe away every tear. What a deal! May God hold your heart in His hands during this time.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Tip wasn't afraid of that bear, great story. Most any other 2 legged friend would have ran like heck.

Very sorry for your loss. My dog is 14 and slowly declining, tough not being able to hike with him like I use to.

Sorry for your loss. It's tough. I also went through this and 2yrs later I still miss my Robbie. Our breeder friend talked me into getting another puppy just 2 weeks after Robbie passed. I was reluctant but she had cancer and he was her last puppy from her last litter. So I took him and was surprised how quickly we bonded. I named him Willy and he is so like Robbie. He follows me everywhere and loves to sleep in my lap.

I was never a guy to advise getting another dog but it's not a replacement. It's just opening yourself up to love again.
