After reading the post on Hummingbird bows making a comeback, I’m curious which bow(s) would you like to see someone start building again?

From: JHPope
Date: 25-Jun-22

Jeff Massie Longbows and Recurves. Had a Longhorn longbow and Model M Recurve. Regrettably I over bowed myself with both. But did some of my best shooting with each. Excellent workmanship and the the longhorn was beautiful. The Model M was greenish and yellowish but wow would it shoot. I was in possession of it on three occasions and should have kept it.

Liberty bows with the passing of Allen Boice.Fred Anderson.Saxon Archery built some beauties in thier Hawk and Selkirk series.Bighorn,Sherrinsky,Ballistic.Vinson Minor (Bows of Wood) built some unique and functional bows.McCullough and his Griffins and 59ers.

kinda sad to see these guys are done with thier Bowyering days.

We need about five more manufacturers to create competition like we had in the 60's, that's what I would like to see with American companies. It's not going to happen though without a time machine. If one is wishing though, I'd vote for Sanders out of Cortland, NY.

Abbott Longbows! Steve passed just a few months after making my current bow (my 4th). Wonderful bows that each new wave of trad archers should have the opportunity to shoot.

Brandon Stahl's - Rose Oak Bows

Savage Deathmaster - I've heard that they they were the the Bow of Bows, or Holy Grail of bows, or something like that. I can't quite put my finger on who it was or what their title was, but I seem to remember someone on here posted about Bob Savage's bows once or twice...

From: shandorweiss

All these posts about bowyers who don't make bows anymore reminded me there's a bow I've been thinking of ordering for several years. I finally ordered one! I don't want to be in the situation again of being about to order a bow I want, and the bowyer stops making bows before I order!

That happened to me with Scott of Vintage Works, and Ken of Whippenstick bows, and Brandon of Rose Oak. Scott had to stop b/c of health reasons. Ken and Brandon stopped for other reasons... among them, not wanting to deal with custom orders anymore. Us archers can be a real PITA to custom bowyers, apparently.

Of course there are other reasons bowyers stop making bows, not having to do with illness or death. One of the main ones is they don't make enough money. Next time you complain that someone's bows cost too much, think about that. Most bowyers don't charge enough to support themselves and their families. Some of the high end bow companies still in business, like Blacktail and Schafer, seem to be charging enough. Although Blacktail has stopped taking custom orders, at least for now. Many bowyers do not ask for or get enough for their work. I'd rather pay more for a bow I really want, and help keep a bowyer whose bows I love in business, than to complain about how much their bows cost.

Bottom line is, bowyers can stop making bows at any moment. Get what you want while you can, if you can.

I see many mentioned Brandon Stahl and RER But one I haven’t seen posted yet is another bowyer who put his company to rest for now and that is Lee Hoots . Lee made me a special custom bow years ago and we became good friends over that. I know have a Hoots little Hoot,a Brandon Stahl Rose Oak Ace and a RER Arroyo made by Kevin . Those 3 will always stay in my stable of bows ....
