When buying or selling a bow or other archery equipment should you .....

a) send the bow and wait for payment ..

b) send the payment and wait for the bow

c) ask for payment and when it arrives send the bow

d) ask for the bow and when it arrives send the payment

if a) you have no bow and no money

if b) you have no money and no bow

if c) you have the money and the bow

if d) you have the bow and the money

Questions like this are why I prefer to buy through e-bay. You pay, they send stuff. They have ratings based on previous transaction history. E-bay monitors and deals with fraud.

I have had good 'personal' dealings with archery forum members, but it was with people I had a history of communication with, not complete strangers. One person mailed me what I bought when I *told him* the check was on its way. I would not expect such trust most times.

Neither one just meet the person face to face solves all the problems and if you live in another country and buying from another in a different country go through an Archery dealer . If you can’t do that go to a shoot somewhere and exchange the bow for the money.

I've bought a bunch of bows on here but I wouldn't buy another one. I'd wait for a shoot and buy there or buy new.

Well, possibly (F)...if the seller has no bow and the buyer has no money, then they can freely claim shipping of the imaginary item/funds at the same time and when neither arrives the "no blood, no foul" rule can be invoked by either party. And both can post a "good trade" thread on the LW!

I use c for people I haven’t had any dealing with before. I prefer using PayPal when buying since it offers a little more security

Almost all of my bows were purchased on ebay. A majority with US postal money orders. No problems, shipped USPS.

Having said that I've also traded bows a few times on the Wall. PM's back and forth. Known history.

Now the rub. Here in Canada they no long issue postal money orders from Canada post. The last few bows purchased via PayPal with Visa payment option. Shipped via FedEx. No problems, so far.

After all the talk of scams the past while I am leery. But as it stands 28 bows is doing me OK for now. But never say never eh.

Yeah, I'll try asking Amazon, or Walmart, or Cabelas just to go ahead and send me something and I'll put the payment in the mail. Not sure it has ever worked that way.

It's one thing if you know the person well enough, but if it's someone you don't, well then you don't even know if it is that person nowadays. I'll stick to the usual routine through a proven method. No money orders of any kind and no sending anything without payment, unless, as stated, we are acquaintances. I've given things away to folks, but that's a totally different thing.

What George said. I prefer PayPal, and when the money is in my account I send the item. I expect the same when I'm buying.

I have had zero issues buying using money orders. I exchange phone and other data, call em have a chat and I tell them to not send anything until the MO has been deposited/cashed. I do the same thing selling. And ......I look for a HISTORY of posting here or on AT. Almost 20 years of deals and zero issues.

Only sold one bow on LW. Guy had buyer's remorse and he sent it back--claimed the limbs were twisted. I sent his money back, and he went on my list. Won't sell here again.

"C" Every time I've sold something here I waited to receive the money and then send the bow. If I was buying from someone I would expect I'd send the money and they would send the bow after they received the money. If the person and I know each other we send the bow and money at the same time.

I think all trades here have both been in route at the same time. All bow purchases have been PayPal & no problems. Money is sent then bow is sent buying or selling. >>>----> Ken

I have bought and sold several bows on this site. All have gone without a problem BUT I INSIST on a personal phone call. If you can't TALK to me, I don't have time for you. Two times, after talking to someone, I decided against the sale. I am old and tech challenged and TEXT MESSAGES do NOT cut it! Many times, after the talk, I have actually sent the bow out at the same time payment was sent. The buyers send me a photo of the USPS Money Order that they sent and I send them the track# on the bow. So far, so good! I will be listing a 2014 model KMag soon and will follow the same plan.

I've bought a lot of bows on Craigslist, and it all starts with a phone call so I know that they're not some kind of scammer or nut job. Once I've introduced myself as the king of a small, archery-obsessed imaginary country called New Bowmania, they seem to be most comfortable with having me send them the payment first.

So far it has worked out well; here's the most recent acquisition: a 1963 Hi-Speed in a 50# draw weight on a 58" frame, which I just shot for the first time yesterday. It's good to be king.

I've got it down to a science, speak on the phone, negotiate a deal, agree on terms, honor the agreement. The folks I've delt with have the same approach. Never had a problem.

I like to get produce or payment first. Never had any problems.

Using Paypal was a good solution to protect both parties but now they will send you a 1099 for receipts that total over $600/year.

I gave up PayPal for receiving payments as the Federal Government now requires a 1099 from them with your name on it when you go over $600 in transactions. USPS Money Order or No Deal. I will send you a payment for your item on PayPal if you like.

Nope, that won't beat it. $600 TOTAL of your selling transactions for the tax year and your entire years sales gets reported. Same on EBay now that EBay handles the money.

All deals on here have been fine. I expect and give fairness. Reasonable is good. No over description or under payment. Ultra fast anything is not necessary.

So would it be fair to say that .... there is a small community of people who buy and sell archery equipment just to make a money (nothing wrong with that) but to aviod payment of taxes and other charges imposed by PayPal and government revenue, they come to the classified section of archery discussion forums to conduct their business to avoid paying taxes on their earnings.

Could be, Phil. Though the vast majority of those are just hobbyists that like to trade, sell, buy and try different bows for personal amusement. The reason for the transactions are not important to the Feds, only the amounts, and that is TOTAL amounts. Now it is up to the recipient of that 1099 to prove that the transactions are not business related and, if high enough, even hobby related can be taxed. Since this site does not handle the money on transactions here, there is no reporting necessary from site administrators, for now anyway.

That's scary but not surprising. I paid sales tax (and other taxes) on every piece of hunting of fishing gear that I own. I also paid income tax when I earned the money. I will not pay another tax if I sell it.

Over the years I have mailed a few bows out for a test drive but not so much anymore. I've never been had but things have changed.

When buying I will usually ask for a specific picture which eases my mind that they own the item. I use postal money orders as payment when buying or selling. Calls and texting make both parties more at ease. There is still a risk to the buyer and waiting for the item to be received is always a little nerve wracking. Luckily I have never had an issue and hope I never do.

As long as you are selling archery equipment or any other personal item, and as long as you are not making a profit on it, you don't have to pay taxes on the teansactions regardless of how much they are.

If you are profiting from the sales then you have to pay taxes. That's the way the tax code reads.

And yes Phil you are correct. And 8ne of the reasons that this revision to the tax code came about is because people were running business transactions through PayPal to avoid being taxed.

But, in an Audit, it is up to you to prove that the money shown on a 1099 was from personal items sold at no profit or at a loss. The IRS does not have to prove ANYTHING. Been there, done that.

That is a fact. And if you aren't capable of doing that you likely shouldn't be handling sharp objects any way.

I recently traded bows with a guy I never meet or spoke too before. Out of the blue he volunteered to send me his bow to test out before we made a trade. Sure is nice to deal with folks that aren’t terrified of being scammed at every turn though it’s a legit concern nowadays.

To each their own. Personally, I won't do money orders unless I know the person. Checks are safer. But I much prefer PayPal. Friends and Family for those I know, Goods and Services for those I don't.

So they report it. Big deal. You think the IRS is looking for small time hobbyists to audit? They can't even answer 10% of the calls they get about tax returns. Just keep good records, be prepared and forget about it is how I deal with it. File returns properly, pay what you owe, don't pay more than you owe.

Just did (b) with a gentleman from Italy, now it’s waiting time. I’m sure all will end well and I’ll have my bow parts as laid out in the deal. I’ve done this numerous times with Leatherwallers and had nothing but pleasant experiences. But this is a first for me with overseas transactions.
