Friends have been inviting me to a big shoot at there club for the last few years , they use the IBO rules so I just read them. Wow I never knew there was so much too it , all of the tournaments I normally shoot are run pretty loosely. Most of the time we don’t even keep score just go for the practice and laughs. I’m not going to get crazy and just going to have fun and see what my score looks like. Hope I don’t embarrass myself…

You wont embarrass your self, just go have fun. That is what it really is all about. As to the rules, they have got complicated and at times pretty silly. Probably why a lot of people choose to only shoot for fun or not shoot at all in organized competition that much anymore. I miss the times when everybody shot pretty much the same way and it was a lot simpler and more about doing what you loved instead of worrying about winning and making sure everything fit all the rules.

If it's not an actual IBO-sanctioned match don't sweat it.
(I have to say it's a bit easier if you shoot *senior* class ;-) )

You are are plain longbow guy who doesn't face walk or use a rest or fixed crawl so it will be pretty simple for Bob. Just step up to the white stake and shoot. You ll do fine. Which shoot is it ?

The Mountain Challenge in Tupper Lake. The rules say all of your arrows have to be exactly the same , guess I have an excuse to fletch up some new ones.

Fletch up new ones..just make sure you have at least 4inch fletch. Stupid rule that applies to a couple of classes depending on what type shoot (IBO reg or IBO traditional ) and what class you want to shoot. If you use 4inch or greater you good in all the classes

Yeah, pretty much all non-wheel classes except RU require 3x 4 inch fletch minimum. I've been shooting it for years so most of my arrows are ok to go.
Good excuse to make up a nice new batch of arrows anyway.
Just remember that IBO 'mixed' shoots and IBO 'traditional-only' shoots use two different sets of rules/classes.

The length of the fletch isn’t a concern but do all the fletching have to be the same color ? I have some arrows with all white fletching and some with all barred orange, all are the same length, weight , brand etc … only difference is color of the fletching.

Yes, The fletching has to be the same color combo on each arrow.
If you aren't competing it doesn't matter.

I'd contact the club and ask them.
http://www.tupperlakearchers.net/archery.php
Looked at their website, and while they shoot 'modified IBO' and use their rules I see nothing that indicates this is an 'official' IBO shoot. Not a State, regional or 'qualifier.' (They use some IBO classes but not all of them. No 'longbow', no 'Recurve Unaided etc.)
Sounds like a good weekend, two courses, shoot one each day.

Also what Dana said. I've been at shoots that only used IBO rules for distances and stake colors.

Just an update on the feather length. The ibo now requires 12” of total feather for most classes so 4 3” or 3 4” is all you need.

Vintage Traditional and Female Vintage Traditional are the only classes that require feathers. The others may be shot with feathers or vanes.

Does anyone know what the fletching rule is about? Do they consider a tuned set up, not needing huge feathers cheating.

One's idea of traditional is, of course, highly subjective, but you gotta go with the rules that are in place. They do their best, given the generation they were born into, so best to cut them some slack. :) Rules is rules, and 'that's all I gotta say about that'.

It doesn't say you can't use large feathers. The 12" mentioned above is the minimum requirement, not a max.

It is a shame that "WINNING" is so vital to some that they would figure sneaky ways to cheat. Rule books just keep getting thicker as people become more underhanded. Takes the fun out of everything.
