I love that one.

About 25 years ago, my brother said something one morning that still cracks me up every time I think of it, but it’s a little bit politically incorrect, so I guess it’s a “you had to be there” kind of thing.

I think my favorite is the one that goes along the lines of “I’ve never been lost. I’ve been kinda turned around for a couple of days a few times, but I’ve never been lost.“

Pretty sure that was Fred Bear.

And Bill Heavey once noted that it is disrespectful to shoot an animal while you are parked on your butt. Something along the lines of “You are about to take a life. Rise.“

Personally, I do think it is important to acknowledge that hunting and killing an animal is not a trivial or mundane thing.

I remember several from a good friend that has passed away. He was teaching me turkey hunting and asked me if I knew how to tell if a turkey track was fresh. I spouted off about 6 things that I could think of and he said " if a turkey is still standing in it it's still fresh" and walked off down the road. Lol another favorite of his was when someone asks him if his dog bites he reply was " she has the equipment, it's up to her if she uses it" I miss that man.

In re: slow days fishing -

A fellow angler asked me how was the fishing and I replied that I had caught a number of fish, but neither the number nor the fish were anything to brag on.

And another thought I’ve had… You never really understand just how big an Elk is until you’re standing there, three hours’ hike from the trailhead, looking at 500 pounds of Dead… and now it’s YOUR problem.

I’ve thrown that one at a few Morally Superior anti hunters (who eat meat).

My other favorite barb : I have yet to meet a Vegan so committed to the cause that they would hike 6 hours with an 80-pound pack to bring their food to the table.

When friends would show me pictures of deer they've harvested that weren't giants and they'd ask me, "Would you have shot this deer?" to which I'd reply, "I don't know if I would shoot it but I'd shoot at it."

Waylon Jennings once said, "If you understand a woman you are one."

My Dad always told me, "Son, I have to pay your six brothers to be good, but you, you're good for nothing."

Or

"You're a good man. For what, we haven't figured out yet." Dad was a jokester.

In our time, which is a rather stupid time, hunting is belittled and misunderstood, many refusing to see it for the vital vacation from the human condition that it is, or to acknowledge that the hunter does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, he kills in order to have hunted.

Maybe someone has a copy of Saxton Pope’s “Hunting with a Bow and Arrow” and can help me out. He has a line in there about life being like an arrow shot out of a bow, bursting forth with speed only to end sinking into the earth with a quiver at the end.

I read that and was like man, that is spot on.
