Yup, Craig, As you well know, one does not need to kill a bird to enjoy the moment. A passion for the outdoors is a Blessed thing. Thanks for taking us along. Appreciate you sharing your experience with us. I still have my tag, but have had some great outings. Cease the Day! MT

I've always held to my opinion, that turkey are one of, if not the dumbest animals there is.
It's their absolute terror of almost everything they see, and/or hear, that makes them hard to hunt.
I've seen them break neck running while looking over their back at a leaf in the wind tumbling on the ground behind them. LOL

Huge challenge. But that’s what makes it fun. It’s just more time in woods with the bow so win win. And if ya get lucky enough to go get one than it’s just that much sweeter.

Merriams become extremely tough to kill if they have pressure. The birds here, because of closed roads, get hammered if they are within a mile of an opened road. That's why the success rate is so low. Birds stop gobbling on the roost, don't gobble on the ground, and it's more of an ambush then a chase. But unpressured birds... a turkey hunters dream!! They're quite vocal, and come aggressively into the calls. That's when it's fun.

I'm in the process of trying to kill a big Tom for the second year in a row on some property close to home. He'll come in, hang up and look for the hen that's been sweet-talking. I had to watch him yesterday at around 35 yards just stand there behind a small pine tree looking around for 10 minutes while 3 hens pecked around my blind within 10 yards. Sunday is my next chance to get out, I'm gonna try the old leafy suit and set up by a hole in the fence where I think he's popping out into the field from. Something tells me that dude's been around the block a few times. Call it instinct, smarts, or whatever, so far he's a little smarter than I am!
Probably should've shot one of the 4 jakes I had walk past the second evening of my season...

They’ve got a brain the size of the end of your thumb.
Wary, yes. When hunted. We have some unhunted birds around here that are dumb as a rope around humans. But they seem to survive the coyotes.
Their brains are not big, but they are damned heavy on optical processing. No wonder so many guys do better in a blind….

Great story and pics Craig. Nice to have encounters like that. I was out yesterday and had one gobbling at fly down and after, but he never came in. Just nice th hear them. Last night we had a real treat at dusk...two whippoorwills calling to each other out behind our house. That was a first here at this house. Heard them when I was a kid up near the St. Lawrence, and one other year in Rome, NY in 2006, but never this close to home and recent. Such a treat to have the wildlife encounters we do. Thanks again for posting. TK

They are prey animals so they are particularly wary of anything that may pose a threat. They are not smart as we see the term, but they likely are smarter than many who chase after them....well, in a predator/prey relationship anyway. I know they can make me look pretty foolish most of the time.

“And their brain size compared to head size is about the same as a human.“
That’s hilarious, if you know why….
JMO, there are a LOT of critters which are just smart enough to learn what is a threat and what isn’t. Threats put them into Wary mode, and the ones that weren’t good at Wary stopped passing their genes along, a long, long time ago….

They are hard to hunt, especially with a bow, but I still say, they are dumb.
They are simply just terrified of pretty much "everything", and that's what makes them hard to hunt.
My opinion.
For a long time around here close, they were all we had in way of game animals to hunt, and I've killed so many, that I stopped hunting them, except every few years I get the hankerin, and usually get one when I do.

Kisatchie , just so you know:
I have never, "not once ever" hunted turkey on a feeder of any kind.
I have never hunted them in the fall seasons, and have always only hunted the spring gobbler season where I called them in for the shot.
Like I said - just so you know.

Of that I have no doubt Mike. I've heard it several times before.
