Saw this guy on youtube. He uses three under and string walking using the width of his fingers to gauge where to crawl. I was impressed with his ingenuity and his results. However, I am very reluctant to try this as the crawls are huge and I wonder what stress is applied to limbs and/or wooden risers. I am looking for opinions, especially those who shoot 3 under and stringwalk. For reference, I am shooting a 62" sage clone. Should I be concerned about limb stressors and stick with split finger or do you think his methods are fairly safe for limb/bow longevity? I also wonder just how loud the bow might be with that method.

Folks been doing it for years and years. For 10's of thousands of shots.

But ultimately you need to make the decision.

Oops. That is Vogtland. Also I tried it and did NOT like the effect on the bow. Huge vibration, loud, and porpoising. My nock was 5/8". I went back to split after an honest try.

You have to retune to give it an honest try. And you also have to stay with it a while.

Meh. I know you are right, but I like what is working now. 20 to 30 yards is plenty.

And that's all that matters. If you are happy with it that's what counts.

I’m with ya Yeller. I’m too old to learn knew tricks. Maybe if I was going on the 3-D circuit but for hunting WV deer at close range my system works ok

The first WV deer kill I ever heard of (age 12) was beaten to death with a Daisy air rifle.

Wouldn’t doubt that lol

Most folks could learn instinctive style shooting very well if they stuck with one bow and used consistent form for a while, instead of trying to shortcut the learning process. I know whatever works is whatever works, but sometimes people make it more difficult than it needs to be just to be able to hit a soccer ball size target at 20 yards, more or less.

If you give your body and brain a chance to work on the process, you won't need any "system" to make you an accurate hunting bowshot; and the beauty of the simple system is you just look at what you want to hit and you hit it. JR knows how that works.

100% George.

A bow should be tillered for three fingers under as not to stress the limbs. Ask any bowyer that knows what he’s doing and I believe you will have agreement, especially when you start to “walk the string” .

Actually many bowyers will tell you that a "3 under tiller" is nothing but a sales pitch.

And it would have no meaningful affect on a bow used for stringwa

Bows were shot very well for decades by 3 under shooters, and even string walkers, well before custom bows came in vogue. Manufactured bows worked great with no issues and many a crazy high score was shot on many rounds.

I just viewed his 18 minute YouTube video on "how to shoot a recurve for newbies", and it reminded me of what Olympic shooters kind of look like. But me not being a gap shooter, nor a string walker, it was a very different approach.

But as Mr. Stout indicated, give most people enough time and practice, they will find THEIR own way.
