My bow is a 60# Howatt Hunter and my arrows have always been aluminum cut to 28". I'm not sure what my draw length is, probably less than 28". I'm wishing to build my own arrows from carbon shafts. Any suggestions as to brand, weight, length, and any other info on working with carbon?

Gonna guess you’re shooting 2018/2117/2216 bracket aluminum. That’s the 400 range.

Are you planning to shorten the arrows to tune, or are you thinking to cut to 28” and tune from there with point weight and sideplate? Either way, probably still 400s

Knowing your draw lemgthnso that draw weight can at least estimated would be helpful.

What size aluminum are you shooting?

2213. I'll try to get that draw length for you as soon as I can get a neighbor to hold the tape measure.

Stay with the aluminum, not all carbon are equal, KISS IMO.

A 2213 is 69lbs.

Don't need a tape measure for draw length. Just have someone stand beside you where they can see the arrow at the front of the bow. Draw the bow with an arrow in it several times in a NATURAL, COMFORTABLE way. If your helper says that your draw appears fairly consistant, draw again and have them make a mark with a Sharpie on the arrow at the front of the bow. Measure from bottom of nock groove to the mark. The easiest carbon shafts I found to use when I left aluminum was Easton Carbon Legacy. A more normal diameter and easy components very similar to aluminum. Reasonable price also.

FWIW, I struggled needlessly at first with carbons using traditional gear. PLEASE do yourself a favor: get a 400 shaft and a 340 shaft. Starting with the 340 full length and with a 100 gr insert, add a 125 point. Bareshaft it. See what it does. Play with insert weight, point weight and then try shortening the length....IF it shows weak. If it shows too stiff, THEN go to 400 spine and repeat the process until your shafts fly the same as your fletched arrows.

Shoot 60# at 28” and I cut my 400 spine to 293/4 with a 175gr tip my 340 spine I cut to 30” with 250-275 tips

I have one as well and have always thought I would try 400’s if I wanted to go carbon, but mine likes 2117’s so well, I am not planning on changing anytime soon.
