Does anyone have any information about Arvid Danielson and his shooting style as far as Glove or Tab , Gap , String Crawl or Instinctive . I am also hoping someone has some pictures of Him shooting they could post .

Years ears ago I shot several times with Arvid and we became friends. He was shooting one of his own bows, a relatively short one and perhaps at about 40 lbs. He shot with a nonmechanical thumb release somewhat similar to the one I independently developed. When he was younger and an Olympic qualifier many years ago he did so using a glove.

I think he shot his hunting bow somewhat instinctively but might have used the arrow tip. I know his full out tournament bow of long ago had sights and probably stabilizers like everyone else at the time.

Anyway, shooting his little Black Swan bow, he had a very smooth release and very steady bow arm. Relaxed grip.

He was quite accurate at the distance we were shooting in his backyard around, around 20 yds. I'd say 3-6" groups. Arvid was doing some flight shooting at this period, but also talked about getting back into tournament archery.

I wrote an article about Arvid that was published in Traditional Bowhunter. I lost my copy in a house fire, unfortunately. I recall the interview was submitted around Nov., 2013. Publication date was probably a few months after that. TBH might be able to get you a reprint.

Avid was very supportive of my own work in archery and IMO was a no b.s. guy who really knew his stuff.

Thanks , I have two issues from TBH with interviews done with Mr. Danielson . Thanks a lot for the information .

From: bsrecurve

I have seen a lot of comments about Mr. Danielson on different threads here on this site and it seems He is a person who thinks outside the box is innovative and also has led a very interesting life .

From: bsrecurve
Date: 22-Apr-22

I would like to hear more about the Thumb Release you developed I am interested in learning to shoot with one .

From: Downcanyon
Date: 22-Apr-22

He got world record for consecutive Robin hoods.

From: Downcanyon
Date: 22-Apr-22

Him and Bruce Lee used to catch flying arrows with their hands. This stuff's not paid up there are pictures!

From: Downcanyon
Date: 22-Apr-22

Made up rather. Chip Green hasn't been around for quite a while on the forum but he has a bunch of pictures.

From: bsrecurve
Date: 22-Apr-22

I have read where He was really into the Martial Arts and had Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris as Friends . I am hoping someone has pictures they can post . I never have seen Mr. Danielson post anything on any sites , to each his own but I would love to hear his points of view on Bows and the state of Trad Archery today .

From: Downcanyon
Date: 22-Apr-22

Chip Green's handle was CM Sackett. He had more photos and stories of Arvid than anybody I know of. Does anybody know what happened to Chip?

From: fdp
Date: 22-Apr-22

Last I knew Sackett was on Facebook. Haven't visited with him in some time.

From: bsrecurve
Date: 22-Apr-22

Does anyone have any comments on the Black Swan bows MR. Danielson makes , I bought a used 58 inch Static Recurve and love it . Its light and very Quick shooting .

From: BenMaher
Date: 22-Apr-22

I’ve read on here and elsewhere that he was an alternate on several Olympic teams in differing sports , from memory it was boxing or wrestling maybe as well as archery

Surely there were records kept?

The world record Robin Hood was documented but perhaps a stunt more than a record per se

Haven't talked to Arvid in a couple of years. I know he had been dealing with arthritis for some time. He was using that thumb strap set up when I bought my first Black Swan. This is my second bow I bought from him with the recurve limbs. Still love shooting them. Unique, just like him...

From: Yellah Nocks
Date: 23-Apr-22

That is one nice bow. Very clean lines, solid two bolt system for each limb.

i used to shoot with Arvid 4 to 5 days a week back in 1993 1994 when Arvid had his shop North of Belgrade MT,i have one of those robin hood arrows in my hand right now ,it is a black T-6 Eliminator with white Knock,he had dozens of these arrows in a box in the back room,he actually cut the end of the swaged end under the Knock so it was hollow,we shot x-caliber 2012 Fluted arrows for 3D,very forgiving and flat shooting, these were in green camo,i have a few i still shoot today,as far as releases Arvid took nylon dog leashes and cut them in 3" to 4" pieces made a loop that went around the little finger than you put the two ends around the string under the Knock and pinched the string between thumb and first finger,i had several of these and shot them for a couple years,i'm missing the tip of my middle finger so got good releases this way, now use a glove and three under.Arvid was having hand issues back then so he used this release and a 40# LB.

Thanks for the information on the thumb release and all the responses .

From: fdp
Date: 23-Apr-22

Bsrecurve, the release described is not a thumb release.. That is a type of strap release of which there have been many over the years.

From: bsrecurve
Date: 23-Apr-22

fdp thanks I have made a leather thumb release that I am trying out do You have a picture of Your Strap release we might look at ?

From: bsrecurve

My Thumb release I came up with .

From: fdp
Date: 23-Apr-22

I don't use a strap release.

You need to Google "thumb tab" and take a look at those if you are interested in using a thumb release.

Then look at some tjumb rings as well.

From: bsrecurve
Date: 23-Apr-22

Thanks , sorry fdp I meant highplains strap release .

From: bsrecurve
Date: 23-Apr-22

Does anyone know what animal Mr. Danielson liked as his favorite to hunt and if He preferred the Longbow or recurve bow .

From: Downcanyon
Date: 24-Apr-22

From what I heard, he might have even done some bowhunting in Vietnam.....

From: Babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 24-Apr-22

Ok thanks. And yes seriously. Wasn’t familiar with him or his bows. Sorry

From: boatbuilder

Would love to shoot that bow Stoutstuff, we don't see many in Michigan, I was just in Tucson AZ but didn't find him or any to try out.

From: highplains
Date: 24-Apr-22

From what Arvid told me the only hunting he did in Vietnam was Vietcong snipers in the trees,he parachuted or slid down ropes into the Canopy with recurve bows.kinda tech challenged with posting pics, just found two releases that Arvid made me,bsrecurve if you PM me your number i can text pics.

From: bsrecurve

I wish He would allow an interview with him I am sure a lot of archers would be interested in hearing his story .

Had the opportunity to be entertained for a couple of hours in his shop as I was shopping for a bow back in 2011. Arvid did not have a presence on the internet, maybe because of age or just as likely, he got bashed a lot for most of his claims. Today I like shooting efficient bows - A&H ACS longbows and Border ILF recurves. My 2 Black Swans still come out and play along side them...

From: bsrecurve
Date: 24-Apr-22

Yes I see Mr. Danielson keeps a very low profile in the cyber world I guess he just lets his bows speak for themselves .

From: BenMaher
Date: 24-Apr-22

“ From what Arvid told me the only hunting he did in Vietnam was Vietcong snipers in the trees,he parachuted or slid down ropes into the Canopy with recurve bows”

Surely this is in jest …

Surely

Olympic Alternate in numerous sports , sparring with Bruce Lee , first to shoot 300 round , invented ILF

And he is killing snipers in trees with his recurve by parachuting in or sliding down ropes …….

What a guy !

From: savage1
Date: 24-Apr-22

I spoke many times at length with Arvid. It's been years since we last spoke. He sent me a template for a riser along with a limb off a bow hanging in his shop. A full working recurve which I made a form off of. I made 4 bows, good shooters. I cant remember exactly but it was his own maybe last glass limb and he shot a record or other with it.

I enjoyed talking to him and he didnt hesitate to share his knowledge.

Actually, the last time we spoke he was in Hawaii accompanying his wife as she had some to do over there.

From: bsrecurve
Date: 24-Apr-22

I see Mr. Danielson looks like he may be shooting a strap release in the picture I saw posted of him shooting in the Flight Archery event , still hoping someone out there has some pictures other than the ones in TBM that they can post of Mr.Danielson .

From: bsrecurve
Date: 26-Apr-22

Mr. Danielson informed me he shoots a glove sometimes but mostly shoots a tab and three under. Great to hear it from The Man Himself .

From: David A.
Date: 02-May-22

When I shot with him he only used his thumb release. Could be he switched to tab recently because of issues with his thumb or because or other reasons.

Re: Olympics, I believe he was an alternate in archery, cycling, and weight lifting. One of the latter two might have been karate. I was told Arvid beat Howard Hills tournament scores in California and he also set several state records there not to mention back to back perfect 300 rounds.

Yes, he worked with Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in workouts or sparring. Arvid was one heck of an athlete in his heyday. Above I gave links to two interviews which are obtainable from Traditional Bowhunter.

From: BenMaher
Date: 02-May-22

I have asked before and never seen any evidence aside from hearsay?

- never any mention of Arvid , certainly not with Norris nor Lee which one could assume was Ed Parkers tourney's ?

3rd Non Japanese to gain Dan ranking in Shotokan ? Im calling this one out as fabricated

from prev , 2013

"Graysquirrel threads don't always follow a topic 100% and I'll deviate a bit more here to address your criticism. What is amazing is the amount of negativity you bring to this forum. FYI, I don't really have heroes, but I think Arvid Danielson deserves some fame on his own merit esp. when it comes to shooting technique. I view this as being fair minded vs. hero worshipping. Aeromakr, I'll be glad to answer. Here are a few of Arvid's accomplishments: trick short artist (Western Bowhunter characterized his abilities as "almost unbelievable"); Northern California junior champion (met Howard Hill and saw him shoot during these early yrs.) won state Collegiate championship and set a now 900 round record; made US Nation team as an Olympic alternate; set world record for most "Robin Hoods" in 24 hrs (347); first or one of the first perfect 300 rounds; followed that up with a second perfect 300 round a week later; expert consultant for Jennings Archery, Astro Archery, Muzzy Archery and others; bowyer for half a century and produced fastest trad. bow ever tested by Norb Mullaney.

I'm sure Howard Hill was very strong, but Arvid made the Olympic team in weight lifting...and cycling!"

the only references I have ever seen to his accomplishments outside of archery online are from Mr Alford and Mr Sackett

From: Downcanyon
Date: 02-May-22

I have spoke to Arvid many times on the phone, and I'm acquainted with several of his longtime friends. I don't really think he really cares what anybody believes about what he's done. I do know for a fact that he's done many impressive things that he is reluctant to speak about. He's always been very helpful and forthcoming when I approach him with bow building questions.

From: crookedstix
Date: 02-May-22

Just because a thing isn't online doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Look at some of the Paul Schafer and Howard Hill anecdotes...why question someone's claim, unless you can offer evidence to the contrary?

It takes all kinds of Whiskey to make a bar it seems a lot of members have varied opinions about Mr. Danielson. Its America so everyone is entitled to their opinions and comments and they are welcomed as far as I am concerned. In my book you are innocent until proven guilty, It seems every time Mr. Danielsons name is mentioned he is put on trial on this site its just my opinion but if the Man served his country honorably in the armed forces he is OK in my book . I welcome all comments but please play nice after all its just Archery . GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS .

From: babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member
Date: 02-May-22

That is quite an olympic accomplishment in all those sports. Like you said. I believe it until I don't. I believe he beat Howard Hills scores too.

From: David A.
Date: 05-May-22

I have seen a video Arvid loaned me of his trick shooting when he was younger. As or more impressive than any of Howard Hill's videos.

I'll always appreciate his open mindedness/compliments about my own shooting methods. He thought outside the box and was a no b.s. type of guy with a lifetime of experience and accomplishments in archery and athletics.

I just conducted an interview with Mr. Danielson and will be submitting it for possible publication in the next few weeks. We discussed his shooting style with his bow along with his favorite animal to hunt, many of his past accomplishments that include California state archery championship, martial Arts expert, horseback archery trick shot artist, search and rescue trainer, and of course his hi-tech bow designs.

From: Stoutstuff
Date: 18-May-22

I'd enjoy reading your interview! Let us know when and where...
