Almost 20 years since I took those pictures. Still shooting that selfbow, no idea how many thousands of arrows it's shot, still holding it's shape and weight. It's a bit darker now.

This is an original trade point I came across near a fork in the Oregon Trail in sandy soil under a sagebrush. A local resident gave me his very educated and researched opinion about iron/steel projectiles, of which he had never found one:

"Lewis and Clark found metal points in common use among the Tetons (Sioux) in the Upper Great Plains in 1804, and later with the Lemhi Shoshones (closer to our area). The points may have been traded up the Missouri River from points east, or could have come from the north via the Hudson Bay Co.

"The style of point you have is called the single-notched tang type (one notch on each side of the stem rather than multiples). George Catlin, the artist, spent time in the northern plains with the Sioux in the 1830s and found that type of point common there at that time. James Hanson did a study of metal points from that same area and found the single-notched tang type to be the second most common style, just behind square - shouldered serrate stemmed points. Square-shouldered plain stems were third, diamond shaped points with long tapered, sharply serrate bases a distant 4th, and points with inverted shoulders in 5th place.

"At least two variants of your point style were found on the Custer battlefield, but most of the Indians there had guns...."

His personal opinion of the point above was: "I wrote the note before I saw your point. I'd think it was Indian-made but for the rounded notches. It is thin and flat as hoop-iron and I see no sign of sharpening. I'd still call it a single-notch variant as is, assuming the base isn't broken."

This is a long post, but I found it very interesting and historically informative.
