Love that maple recurve....

I have a Cascade Brush Hawk, but am not sure whether it was made by Fred or outsourced to Checkmate.

I have only seen a few of Fred's bow's and none in person. The finish work is impressive.

Seneca_Archer Chek-Mate never made Fred Anderson's bows. They built Steve Gorr's bows at a point in time.

I’ve come very close to buying that maple riser bow you posted pics of.

The weight is just a little too high.

I will post a pictures of a couple of bows Fred made when he was a young man!

From: Pdiddly2
Date: 15-Apr-22

Fred’s bows were Cascade Mountain.

Cascade Archery was a different outfit and many of those bows were made by Chek- Mate.

From: Seneca_Archer
Date: 15-Apr-22

FDP/Pdiddly2, Thanks for the clarification, bought the bow used, not familiar with its history.

My apologies to jegs.mi didn't intend to sidetrack your post.

Here's a pair of FASCO Sonic's that Fred made in the 60's!

One is a Sonic and the other is a Super Sonic and they were made the same day, only three numbers apart. I bought them two years apart so pure chance they were made the same day.

They were 57" bows and very popular...I found both of them to be quiet and fast.

They have nice thumb rests made from a separate piece of wood...this is the Super Sonic with wood overlays on the belly of the riser.

Fred loves to rove and I like to rove with the Sonic!

Here's one of the two dozen or so "Mojos" that Fred sent out into the world--a 47# sweetie that was named "Rattler;" his own hunting bow.

And then there was this one back around the late 60's...a FASCO Model 55, which Frisky tipped me off to when it came up on eBay late one night. He actually confessed that it's his favorite bow riser ever.

I also owned two of Fred's Skookum bows. Works of art from the tips to the handle.

Ended up selling my bows made by Fred when I could no longer handle the weight.

I have two of Fred’s bows: a Skookum and a Hyak.

From: Jegs.mi Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 16-Apr-22

John, Which is the skookum in the picture?

From: John Horvers
Date: 16-Apr-22

Jed, the Skookum has the light brown handle wrap. The Hyak is a deflex/reflex style bow.

From: Homey88
Date: 16-Apr-22

Did he make the Anderson broadhead as well?

From: fdp
Date: 16-Apr-22

Homey Fred is the guy up the thread with the handle skookum. He will answer any question you have.

That hyak is very nice!

If Fred is as gifted as a bowyer as he is as a writer , his bows must be witty , fast and full of wisdom .

If I could own one bow it would be one of Fred’s …

I genuinely admire and respect the man

Beautiful bows, SO NOW ""WHO "" was Fred Anderson?? When did he start building bows , what if any companies did he work for, did he ever serve in uniform ??? Just nice to know information to put together with the above bows.

Alpine by Fred Anderson….what a bow.

From: dnovo Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Apr-22

Fred Anderson was one of the master bowyers of his time. He worked Making Fasco bows in California back in the 60's then started Cascade mountain archery in the early 80's. He made custom longbows and recurves, but mostly longbows. His number one bow was the Skookum. He's probably about 80 years old now and retired for some time. Look up a couple books,, "The Traditional Way and Toxicated" that he wrote.

From: Phil Magistro
Date: 17-Apr-22

Dnovo, While Fred May be best known for his Skookum I’m not sure he would agree that it was his number one bow. He was innovative and continues to create new designs after the Skookum. His Hyak was an excellent bow and, as I mentioned above, offerings like his Sasquatch were top notch.

Fred was the second poster on this thread and showed two photos of his bows. Hopefully he will stop back here soon.

Some years back, by a stroke of dumb luck, I stumbled across this bow. Back then I thought my 58" recurve was long for a hunting bow and not sure I'd like a "long" 60"er.

And the poundage was little on the "light side" for what I was using back then. I had heard of this Anderson fella and if I ended up liking the bow, it could be my "old man" bow

Fast forward a few decades and my how tastes change. That "long" 60"er worked out alright for hunting, as a mater of fact I've come to like the longer bows, longbow and recurve. I may be wrong but I believe he had a longer 66" recurve back then, ?.ridgerunner?? maybe. Wish I could find one of those in a poundage I use these days. I can't imagine a nicer shooter than this bow, but I'd like to find that out "the hard way". Hahaha

Here are a few more photos of Skookum's Mojo recurve. One day, it arrived, announced, sent from Maine by Crookedstix, as an expensive gift for teaching him all about bowhunting. Shortly afterward, he and a Canadian thug showed up and stole it from me! It was a nice shooting bow, with snakeskins glued on with Elmer's School Glue. I didn't miss the bow as soon after the theft occurred, I got my hands on a Bear TD and the rest, as they say, is history!

I meant to say the bow arrived "unannounced" as Crookedstix sent it without my permission. Naturally, I thought it was mine. Then, he swiped it from me.
