Would like to buy a nice osage bow, who sales a good one? Thanks

wilcoxbows.com. Stim Wilcox is a very good bowyer. They will run around $700 or so (don't quote me on the price) but you will have a great bow.

A good friend of mine, John Pruitt, will make you one for $150 or less. I can give you his phone number if you want it. Here are some photos of his bows.

Darren, those are nice looking bows. How long are they? How do they shoot? Do you have any side profile pics, unstrung and strung? Thanks

Come over to the shop and we will make you one. I cut out two really nice hickory bow blanks a couple days ago, very dry, straight and knot free, you can have one to work on.

I will take you up on that Eric!!! I will get in touch with you! I know Darrin has made a nice one with your help too. Thanks everyone for your help.

They may come as good but you won't find a finer one than those made by Jim Rempp of Hamstring Archery in Missoula MT...PR

Tony, I have several of Mr. Pruitt's bows. Most are in the 63" to 66" range of length. I do have one short one that is 56" long for turkey hunting.

John is a big believer in letting the bow work across its entire length so there is some hand shock. He also will cuss you pretty hard if you ask him to put a shelf on one so be prepared to shoot off your hand. That being said, his bows shoot fast and lots of folks have killed game with them. He can also crank one out in a couple days so you don't have to wait forever to get your bow.

The last bow I got from him was 64" long and bamboo-backed. I think I paid $90 for it delivered to my door.

He will always tell you that his bows come with a lifetime guarantee - his lifetime, not yours. Even though he's 72 now, I think that's still a good warranty.

The romance of a self bow is best experienced by one you make your self....head over to Eric's and make your own IMHO

And a well made self bow shouldn't have any hand shock regardless if it bends in the handle thru out the whole bow or not

heck I'll make you a real nice one for $700 ;).

From: UrbanDeerSlayer

Darren, sounds like a good deal. I will cut my own self on the bow, lol. Maybe send me Mr Pruitts number. Thanks

From: Eric Krewson

Heck, I will help you make a super nice one for $0, what a deal. Just finished #145 so I know a thing or three about making bows.

Brandon and I have been friends for 20 years at least, live fairly close to each other, he is always welcome in my shop.

Arvin Weaver makes a great selfbow, his bows have won the last two IBO Trad Worlds ! If you want a bow to shoot arrows buy an AW if you just want to fling arrows then buy something else. My 2 cents. Cal PS There are other nice bows out there I am sure, I just don't know or have shot any of them . Good luck

Thanks Eric I appreciate the offer and will defiantly come by the shop!!!

James Rempp gets my vote......he's a machine at the pace he kicks out bows.......his number is 406-546-6997

Big B if you can wait until March and you would like to tryout some selfbows, come to the Mid America IBO shoot in Chester Tx. March 7,8,9 you will have a great time and have a chance to shoot some great selfbows. Or go to Twin Oaks Tenn. Classic they will help you make one. Or right in Al. the Pre Spring Arrow Fling. Cal

Agree with Blackhawk about making your own. It's a fantastic hobby/sickness!

Brandon, Eric Krewson is one of the best osage selectors and yellow dust makers around.. Going thru some rough times recently..

DO take him up on his generous offer..You will probably cheer him up too....

There's a reason why things happen..why people come together in a somewhat random fashion in life..:)

I truly believe that..tho oft-times it's only later when I know what the reasons were....:) Jim

Dont know Mr Weaver and am not saying anything positive or negative about him or his bows,i just cant believe, that anyone would post that,in any serious manner.LOL

Well Todd, the man asked who made a good selfbow and I told him. I don't think he would care if I made one that I could hit the side of a barn two out of three times. Eric, wasn't knocking you or your bows, hope your guys do better next year. Cal

From: badger
Date: 18-Dec-13

Dances, do you think it might have had something to do with the indian behind the bow. Looking at the scores Arvin Weaver didn't shoot all that well. I am assuming he shot on of his own. Not knocking Arvin, a lot of us bowyers are not the greatest shots.

From: danceswithleaves
Date: 18-Dec-13

Yes your right, but you still need a good shooting bow. I don't think he could have won with one that I built LOL or with many of the bows that I have shot in the past that people have handed me thinking I could make anything shoot. Arvin has never claimed to be that great a shot, but he is a great person and takes great pride in the bows he hands to a man to shoot. The man asked a question and I gave an honest answer that's all, and only qualified it by stating a fact. Cal PS Those men that won those shoot's are two of the best shot's I know, so your right, them Indians are very good !!

Eric your the man. There are lots of great selfbow makers out there but it is the person that does the winning. Simple

From: Darin Putman

Brandon can't beat the shop time with Eric, great to be around making bows or not, then you know that better than most. He also has a strong desire to pass all that knowledge of self bows that he has on to others, and does it well. Thought I'd learn to make a bow wound up making a friend. Can't wait to see what you make Brandon.

John Strunk in Tilamook, Oregon, makes great selfbows. I've shot several that he made. In fact, he just shaved down my Don Adams yew English longbow from 60# to 48# and he did an excellent job. Don Adams is retired now.

I just haven't had experience with many other selfbowyers, except for Welchman Longbows, who also makes excellent yew bows.

If I had the time it takes, makeing and selling selfbows would be a dream job..........Check out Gills Primitive Archery, his bows are his passion, and just like myself, nothing but pure love gets poured into them, ask any bowyer. before I built my own, I bought one just to have something to look at and get the feel of what good tillering should be. Mr Ed Scott is my personal favorite, Owl Bows are a work of art.......

I've bought two self bows on the Classified. on this site, both were 100 dollars and both are great shooting bows.

Go to Eric Krewson. I shot competition for twenty-couple years, it is the archer not the bow, especially when similar bows are well made. And I never hear Eric boasting and blowing hot air.

I would except I'm in PA, a little far to travel.

But you aren't the original poster. 8^). You should contact either Jeff Durnell or RC. Both post here, and both are Pennsylvania boys who make great osage bows. They live the the Pittsburgh region.

Thanks George. I also live in the Pittsburgh region.

For any selfbow I have a short list....mostly based on personal experience but also with history here...

If he was still making and selling bows....Dean Torges. Since he is not then John Strunk is my GO TO GUY for osage, yew or vine maple. I have a vine maple and also a rawhide backed osage covered with snake skins...all great shooters.

I am sure there are others here and local to you that build a very fine bow as well as Gary Davis (RattleStick) or Raptor Archery and others.

I decided I am not buying any more bows...got a partially finished hickory bow that has been in mid life crises since 2001.....but wife got me a new stave for Christmas so I can start from scratch and get back into the groove without learning all over on that one I started right before we were attacked by terrorists...and then I immediately deployed for next couple years...so it has some meaning for me.

Good luck with search.....but get a couple videos....the TBB especially Vol 4....a couple other books by Jim Hamm, Dean Torges, Jay Massey, etc....and have some fun.

Hell go to TN and get with Pappy during their annual event and learn there and make some friends to boot.

keep em sharp,

ron herman

I have some awesome selfbows from alot of the guys mentioned in post above, BUT when a guy like Mr Krewson invites you over to help for free I would not hesitate, he is one of the best in my eyes.

Horseapple- you should probably send me those bows since you have gone to the dark side with cams. I will put them to good use.

Them Penn. Yankees can sure stir up a pot. Calvin I thank you for your comments but there are a few more good bowyers out there. Calvin just gets a little excited sometimes.lol And yes I am a poor shot. My wife however can shoot very well. And yes if you are a bowyer and can not shoot well. It is always nice to have the hot rods tote one of your bows. I have been very blessed in that way. Arvin

From: badger

Arvin, don't feel bad. If I spent as much time shooting as I do making bows I might shoot a bit better myself. Lately my groups have been so tight that I had to put up 6 targets on my target face so I don't break arrows, my secret? I have my target set at 5 yards LOL. My target space was recently reduced beyond my control.

Arvin Weaver or Eric.

I have shot selfbows of many of the top bowyers out there. I mean guys that have been doing it for 10 or more years as a pro not a hobbie. The osage sinew backed flatbow made by Ted Fry at Raptor archery is the best. little if any string follow and fast. These are slim fast bows made to hunt with.

From: Dhanu
Date: 26-Dec-13

Jay St. Charles makes very fine selfbows from yew wood, however I don't know if he makes them from osage.
