Will start hunting from ground and wants opinions about options for stools, ie' bucket, stools, etc. Tree seats may be ok unless you are in cut-over with no trees. I'm 6'2" and 230. Interested in comfort, quiet, packable and possible swivel? Help please!!

I'm your size and I find a folding stool with compartment underneath is excellent. Mine is made for rifle competition and all I did was add a carrying strap to it so that I can sling it crossshoulder. I've seen similar stools at WalMart for about twenty bucks.

From: EricW

I prefer my Double Bull chair(There are others just like um cheaper) Fold up and can sling over my shoulder.

From: gcoleman

ditto on the double bull stool, but not good on real unlevel ground like the mountains here in WV,,,have looked at the Bull stool in 3 rivers but weight is a factor for me

From: mjh Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I havent found the perfect ground hunting chair/stool! There was an add in TBM about a new one coming out that has it all but its a bit heavy, a bit pricey, and not yet on the market.

I have used the Bull seat. Heavy, noisy to carry and set up, adjustable legs are very nice, no back rest.

I use the double bull chair, the smaller one. Light, easy to carry, has back rest, no adjustable legs, does not swivil easly handles my 245lbs. I've had cheaper similiar chairs get bends in the tubing so look carefull at the cheap ones before yea buy.

I often use a 5 gallon bucket with the swivel seat lid. I carry inside a panel of die-cut camo cloth about 5 feet by 12 feet. I have tied black nylon fish line at the corners and along the borders. I also make five 'posts' using threaded rods and screw-on joiners. These can be taken out of the bucket, screwed together to 2, 3, 4, or 5 feet in length, and used to hold up the camo cloth. More often, I just use the nylon line and tie it to existing brush, limbs, etc. I especially like this rig where I hunt late season. I usually just back into a cedar down with from a well-used trail in the snow, string the camo in front of me, and I'm ready for business. I am 6 foot 3 1/2 inches, and tipo the scales about 265. This is comfortable for me for fairly long periods of time.

Ditto, 5 gallon bucket with the swivel seat lid, been using one for along time. Great way to carry gear (see lunch).

From: FoxWalk

One big question is, "how do you hunt?". That will have a huge impact on your choice of seating. I can't argue with the convience, capacity and comfort of a 5 gallon bucket. However, I like to travel. I don't stay within 50 yards of my truck. I roam the trails for miles. I walk a ways, set up and sit for 15 or 20 minutes maybe..then still hunt on down to another spot. Sometimes it is just resting by a tree for a while, sometimes, if the mood strikes, I might set up and stick around for a while. For that sort of huning, packing a bucket just doesn't work. I have a small folding stool (if anything at all).

if you have a known spot you like to hunt, like a semi-perminant ground blind, a bucket would be great. If you plan to travel a bit and hunt different spots, needing flexibility, then maybe not so much.

Just some thoughts.

I've been using the Nifty-seat this year and I couldn't be happier, its made for mobility and comfort. ceck them out, try and get the hurricana specials if they still have some left, these were in a warehouse during the Katrina Hurrican and aren't as shiny as the new ones, they are perfect. do a google search for nifty seat and you will find them.

From: mjh Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 29-Oct-08

If your going to move around alot a Nifty-seat is just the ticket. If your going to sit for an hour or more a Nifty-seat will NOT be so good. I have a Nifty-seat. I only use it when I plan to be on the move. Use it more for squire hunting with my .22 than bowhunting. The Nifty Seat was the first portable seat I tryed after the 5gal bucket. Its limitations where quickly evident after trying to sit for an extended period of time. Haveing a tree to but the back against helps but not much.

I admit the bucket is not for great travel, but it works traveling more than 50 yards from my truck. I take it with me on a mile walk back into the swamp, after walking across 1/2 mile of farm field--it still works. For more mobility while staying on the ground, I use a strap on tree seat purchased about 30 or 35 years ago. It works on big or small trees, fence posts, etc. It rides across my back while walking. Keep looking, you'll find the right one for you.

I have a small, 3 legged tri-pod seat that sits about 1.5 feet off the ground. It has no back, but is very comfortable if you can find relatively level ground. I like it because it folds very small, I can fit it in my pack, or tuck it in my belt while I walk. It weighs about 1 pound.

It is easy to sit on and shoot without standing and low enough to the ground to hide yourself. I wish I had a picture for you but that is what I take when I'm on the ground. Much more efficient to carry than a bucket.

I had the Double Bull chair and bent it by leaning back against a tree. My best stool is a 5 gal bucket with a small swivel boat seat with a back that I attached to the bottom. I cut up one of those old single loop tree straps so I could put it on my back. I can put all my gear that I take inside.

I have a Bull or Buck all terrain seat. The one I have is an older model and was not as expensive as the new ones in the 3 River or Kustom King catalogs. It breaks down quickly and is easy to assemble. More packable than a 5 gallon bucket. No back and not the most comfortable for long sits but the best I have found to date.

Ameristep 3 leg swivel. I recently got one and love it. It's light enough to strap to my backpack or just carry in. The legs are adjustable for uneven terrain and have already come in handy. Seat swivels easily w/no noise. $20 from basspro. After using it a few times, I would readily $40 for another if this one ever goes out.

Musn't be any stoolpackers 'round here.

Anyhoo, I also have been using a cheap 3-leg folder and added a longer strap to it so I can carry it across my back like a backquiver. I'm no small-fry. And I like to do the travel/stop/travel thing. Works fine where the ground isn't "boggy". If it's "boggy", the legs sink down :(

From: bowdog1
Date: 29-Oct-08

Thanks for your comments. I guess there is no "ultimate". Bucket seems best for 2-3 hour set-ups and has capacity for any extras like ghillie suit, binos, food, saw, ratchet pruner. Now I need to come up with back pack for bucket!!!

I like to use a plastic folding stool that rv stores sell. They are light, fold up flat, small enough to fit in my pack, are strong, come in green or black, and only cost around $11 or $12. Set it in front of a tree for camo/backrest and you can be pretty comfortable. A thin piece of foam on top is nice too. Norm

The trouble with most seats is they are too low to the ground and if you sit long enough, you will definitely have a backache. I have found a "close" to the ultimate hunting seat. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a back rest on it and wasn't so expensive. It is called The Walkstool. It weighs less than 2 pounds and can be ordered in 3 different heights. I have the Walkstool 65 which has a seat height of 26 inches. The seat itself is triangular and is 16 inches to each side. It folds up very compactly for carrying. It also is built to support 500 pounds. Seat height is important in that it is easier to stand up easily without much motion and is much easier on the back.

Recently bought a Cabela's folding tripod stool, taller than some others. Not too comfortable but for a quick post where you don't have a tree stand set up it works well enough.

Saw one in the new ORVIS catalog I got yesterday $89, imported. Folding tubular frame has a round swivil seat, backrest folds up for use or down not to be used, has a pouch underneath, 4 legs with tublar stuff on the bottom between legs. Folds up for travel. I've seen similar chairs for less but wonder if the Orvis one is better quaily and how much of the price is in the name?

From: reddogge

$40 for the seat and $49 for the Orvis name. Just like all of the Ranger gear.

I have used folding seats of aluminum, which can be very comfy, but the occasional metal sound irks me (deer too). The torges tree seat is nice and quiet when you decide to move, and a 5 gallon bucket is good for setting up for all day.

Aside from a modified Dean Torges tree seat this is what I use when I am runnin' & gunnin' on the ground.

I used to weigh 348#s and this seat held me without fear of breaking.

It will allow you to sit at two different heights and it is comfortable.

I can sit completely still on this seat for 30 to 45 minutes before having to stand and shift. With a good cushion I've lasted much longer.

This has been a good addition to my Ghillie set-up.

Yeah it's a little pricey but it works.

I use a three legged stool and I modified it a little so it won't sink in so far. I changed the three leg end caps , drilled a hole in them and cut three pieces of PVC (2" wide and about 2 1/2 " long ")from a 4" PVC pipe. Then drilled hole in PVC and used a small bolt, washer and self locking nut. I just put it trough my fanny pack strap and away I go.

Dean Torges tree seat, I just made one and so far I love it, I made it 16" x 16" and added some foam to it, tonight I attached my possibles bag to the underside of it, I'll see how that works out on the next couple of hunts.

http://www.bowyersedge.com/treeseat.html

From: spider1
Date: 31-Oct-08

The Torges treeseat works great but ya gotta use the poly rope. The problem I had was the rope I used had way too much stretch to it and the seat would collapse on me from time to time. But with the right rope it does work great and easy pack around and shoot out of.

From: Charlie
Date: 31-Oct-08

And you don't want to get the rope to high above the seat or it'll just roll down the tree, about a foot or so above the seat, maybe a little more, works perfect.

For you guys that have the Walkstool, what size/height/model did you buy?

I just ordered the 22" high comfort XL model. It's the more expensive "Made in Sweden" model. I hope it was $80.00 well spent??

From: Bowinkle
Date: 02-Nov-08

I use a Tree Seat, but I replaced the strap with a strong ratcheting cargo tie down strap (I used to weigh in at over 400# but I’m half of that now)

It is comfy & can be set to the tree high enough to sit comfortably & be able to stand with little movement & the tree is your back rest. I sling it across my shoulder to carry in like a back quiver. I also covered the metal parts with duct tape to keep it quiet while walking

I have several different hunting seats, including a Nifty Seat. It gets the job done, but the comfort factor isn't very high. I ordered one of the Hunting Seats sold by a couple guys on the tradgang site and it's the most comfortable, easy packing chair I've owned. You can brace it against a tree, or use it's third leg when no tree is available. I added an air cushion to the back and a thinner pad cushion to the seat of mine. I can strap my double bull to the back and carry it like a pack, or I can simply hook one of my packs to the provided snap hook on the back of the chair. This is the best hunting seat I've tried. It's great for "power naps" in the woods too. :)

If you go over to the Tradgang Pow Wow site, there should still be a thread running concerning hunting seats. If not, do a search. Squirrelbait and Ray Harmond are the fellows you need to contact. Ray has a link under the Sponsor adds. Not exactly sure on the spelling of his last name. They are not taking orders for the chair right now. I guess they're booked for the time being. I think I paid 85 bucks for mine a year ago. It is without a doubt the very best attempt at the "perfect" hunting seat I've ever found.

I really like the tree seat, It's the only way I can sit out all day without being in a very good/comfortable stand. It's not only comfortable it's quiet, light weight and cheap and easy to make!

Dean's tree seat is awesome. I used it in the past and have been using it this year. It's highly portable. It sits flat against my back for when I'm still hunting. It's silent when I walk. When set up it gives my back support. I also have a small folding camp stool and a larger stool with a back. Jawge

Papa Doc, Mine's like yours, three legged and I really like it. Sewed a clip on it so I can collapse it and hang it on my belt and still hunt and drop and sit. But am going to put on the ground supports like yours to keep it from sinking into soft ground cause it never seems to fail, one leg always wants to sink and make it uneven. LOL. Thanks much.

Bowdog1, if you have decided on a bucket and you are trying to figure out how to pack it....I utilized a heavy duty bungee cord. The bucket I have has a couple of holes on the side and the bungee metal hooks on the end fit it pretty good then I closed them shut so they won't come off. This makes it something you can just sling over your shoulder and carry on your back behind you as you walk. Regards.
