Don't know a lot about Sitka Spruce arrows. Are they a harder wood then POC? How do they compare to POC's?

I think sitka spruce is great nice grain. weight and really nice to work with. also takes stain real easy and they fly great. i think i will stick with them over cedar just because most of the cedar today is crap.

Well said.

Depends on the source. Rose City still supplies great shafts to many dealers (or direct TYD).

There is good and bad cedar and spruce. Depends on who you buy from.

i guess what i was trying to say is the (premium) cedar shafts companys are selling today would have been considered stump shooters 20+years ago .but that just my opinon.

Bowcrazy: I'm just a bit confused now. 20 years ago we got POC from Acme and Rose City. Rose City still uses the same process and old growth trees with their 'agreement'. What's changed?

I've never shot spruce.

Who makes a good spruce arrow?

Foxfire? Elite Arrows?

I've found cedar to be just as consistent as it ever was. The old Acme shafts were burnished and looked nicer in the raw than todays shafts, but I don't know how much better they could have been. You have to buy from a reputable seller. Rose City will sell you good cedar. So will Kustom-King.

I just ordered a dozen from Foxfire. Unfortunatley I do not have the equipment to make my own shafts so Hildebrand is out of the running. Great people over there though and when I do decide to make my own I will be calling them. :)

I agree with George S. I've been very pleased with Rose City shafting and the dealers who sell it over the last couple of years and frankly I don't recall POC being any better 40 years ago--only that I don't remember spending much (if any) time straightening it back then.

Get your cedar shafts at Raven Archery and you won't be disappointed ever. Small supplier in Idaho. He does his own shafts and they arrive looking polished. That's how finely they are finished coming off his machine. I've always found them to be well spined and matched and that's been for over 15 years I've been using them.

Where is Raven Archery? Do you have a website or address phone etc?

I will stir the pot a little. FIR..... I sell and use the Surewood Shafts Fir arrows. Love em. Customers are loving them. Strong, straight and heavier. Excellant quality. The POC are still good shafts, I just prefer the FIR myself.......

Sitka Spruce is the strongest wood in the world for it's weight. That's just a fact.

This is the same material that Howard Hughes used in the Spruce Goose and that was used in many an airplane wing spar as well as sailboat masts.

IMHO spruce is the best thing going out there right now. If there were something better, I'd be selling and using it myself.

P.S. Thanks again for your order Derrick ;)

All the best to you,

Tracy

Hildebrand-the best spruce shafts! They buy "piano grade" spruce that Steinway rejects because of a pitch pocket or a small knot. Then they use the use of it. Piano grade spruce IS the best grade there is! Neil and Roxanne are great folks. Ravens Arrows-Great folks too. They send you 14! shafts for a dz. Some of the straightest grained POC out there. Yes, the surface is burnished and looks good right out of the box...they just scream "make me into an arrow!!!" These are the two suppliers I have used for quite awhile and see no reason to change...I don't know why I am telling you this cause now I won't be able to get some of the orders as fast...but I hate to see anyone not get what they pay for. I have never been disappointed by either. The Spruce Goose was mostly made out of other woods. But he did use spruce in it...it just rhythmed so they called it that. It is on display in the Aviation Museum up by McMinneville, Oregon Pound for Pound spruce is the strongest "light" wood. That is why it makes great shafts..very durable.

Either one makes a great arrow, spruce is tougher. Most of the archery shops get their spruce shafts from Hildebrand, for a good reason, their outstanding.

Thank you Tracy! Anxious to get them and try them out!

Mandoman is right. Neil is the only guy milling spruce that I know of. We're selling the same stuff at the same price. I remember with a lot of nostaglia the cedar shafting of 30 years ago. They were still getting old growth stuff in those days.

Tapered and stained the shafting today Stick'em. They should go out in the mail to you by Saturday.

Everything I sell, I have tried for myself. If it doesn't measure up, it never makes it to a customer.

All the best,

Tracy

Hey everybody, how about three rivers sitka shaft's,are they any good???,i'm just starting to shoot woodies and love them.I love them so much i retired my carbons.

It's been about 2 or 3 years since I tried them; they were just OK, nowhere near as good as the Hidebrande, which Tracy (Foxfire) uses.

I ordered a couple dozen POC from Raven Arrows and was extremely pleased. The only wood arrows that I didn't have to straighten prior to cresting.

I used Hildebrand spruce last year and have went to cedar this season. What a mistake! I've gotten cedars from several different suppliers and none of them have been as straight, as tough, or as true in flight as the spruce I got from Hildebrand. Only drawback is that they are a little lighter than I prefer.

Reaper, 3Rivers Sitkas come from Neil Hildebrand. They are an excellent shafting material. Very straight grained, easy to straighten and maintain.

Dan, I don't understand how 3Rivers Sitkas and "nowhere as good" as Neil Hildebrand's Sitkas shafts since they all originate from the same source. Neil supplies 3Rivers as well as foxfire, raptor, and several other retailers too. You may want to look at that one again???
