Fortunately, not a destructive one, or at least not this visit. Hopefully gone down the road to visit a better place.

wow Jerry! I would have the G&F come move that big boy, unless you are planning to fill the freezer with it this fall.

I would get some rat traps..screw them to the posts and bait them..perhaps a sharp rap on the snout would discourage his visits. Codjigger

It's May. All the black bears in the lower 48 are out of their dens and hungry. There aren't any berries ,yet, except in Florida and the berry farms in the southern belt of states, and the cicada brood hatches are very local, so the bears are more willing to get close to humans than they are in October when they have a smorgasbord. There are over 8000 black bears in the mountains of western NC and I see them on my property - in a housing development, several times each week, sometimes inside my fenced yard and a few times on my porch..and I have two large, loud dogs. It never ceases to amaze me how some folks react to a close encounter with a black bear.

Yes Mark, bears are a very common thing here as well. usually the young males are getting kicked out and like starving teenagers, trying to survive on their own. We have what I call the bear trail behind our property where it is very thick brush heading up the mountain. Have had them on my porch hundreds of times, even stealing a brand new bag of Ole Roy dog food before I had a chance to put it up. he was a really big boar and I let him keep it. I never was into bear hunting after standing on my porch and shooting one with my bow. Have gone to the front door to see who was on the porch only to be staring eye to eye with a big bear. I respect their power and abilities but unless it is a big boar or a sow with cubs (yes, had a sow chase me long enough to not be a threat to her cubs) I do not fear them like so many do. fun to watch at times, even when sitting in my boat.

my friend in the mountains had enough of them arond his house that they were out of curiosity vandilizing stuff around the house- charcoal grill and propane tanks rolled down the mountain etc.
he put a low electric fence wire around his yard and it worked
some took the wire down running through it when getting shocked for a bit but they learned and it keeps them away

Bugle up, it is an old turkey feeder that was on the property when we purchased it. My young nieces put goodies in it for the critters. They put some old pizza in it and the bear came for a snack.
