Many of you may not know my friend Donald Dobbs, but here in Alabama, Donald is well known by archers that have been shooting for decades. Donald called me today to share this outstanding story with me.

Donald Dobbs was also a friend to Howard Hill and especially to Mr. Hill’s wife, Elizabeth. Donald used to go visit and work on Ms. Elizabeth’s typewriter.

Donald just turned 87 years young, still hunts and shoots a longbow, but this story really isn’t about that.

Donald needed to really drop some more weight in his bow and asked Steve Turay w/ Northern Mist Longbows as well as Jim Belcher w/ Bivouac Bow Co., to see if they could find a used low poundage, left-handed longbow. Donald is also friends with both.

Neither of these men, both are also friends with each other, knew what either of them was going to do.

Well, let me tell you what they did. The next thing Donald Dobbs knew, a brand new Northern Mist longbow and a brand new Bivouac longbow arrived at Donald’s home. Both of course were low poundage and left-handed.

I have said and will always say, our archery family is second to none, in my opinion.

I personally want to thank Steve Turay & Jim Belcher for their unselfish generosity.

I'm happy to hear this, and certainly appreciate their having provided him with the bows, and your heads up on the subject! I don't know any involved, but have seen Mr Dobbs on several videos, and could listen to his stories "all day", very beneficial! I sure wish him good results with these bows, and I'd sure like to actually see him on hopefully, a video or 2, or better a bunch, shooting or even hunting with these bows! I've watched him on I believe his sons channel and have heard Robert Carter mention him few times. Hopefully we'll see him on these, and get to hear what he has to say! Mr Dobbs is a wealth of interesting information! Thanks Terry!

It’s always great to hear when people step up and show their generosity.

The true giving spirit, of these men, is evident here and I think as a group or as a whole, the traditional community, are the most upstanding, generous, thoughtful people, a fellow man can call friends!

I am not being shameful here, but since Bearcurve59 brought it up, Donald will be at this years Howard Hill Classic to see and visit with friends, PLUS, he wants to shoot those bows.

Very awesome, so glad that you shared this. Yes, we have some of the finest people in this community. Yes, some are not but there are plenty that are simply great people. Even though most of us will never meet in person, we are able to meet like this, and friendships are made. It has totally amazed me at how people can and do reach out to help others from across the great nation, helping people that they really don't know at all but making such a huge difference in lives. It says so much to someone to have people care about them. A lot of you have made impacts to young people and a few Vets that you will never meet but the impacts are still there. It is a good thing to know that you are among such people as this. Yeah, we have real character in our bunch, and as many have found out, real hearts. Family helps family, it's what we do.

Hugh Rich and Donald Dobbs never met in person, but did correspond by phone and regular mail. Donald sent Hugh a couple of audio tapes that I have. I could listen to Donald's slow southern drawl all day. A true Southern gentleman.

Simply outstanding. With hopes this kind of spirit continues in this group and with this nation.

Both of those bowyers are outstanding! Not only as bowyers but as human beings. Great story

Great post. Donald is a true archery treasure. His video interview by his Grandson Scott is on You Tube. I talked to Scott a few times. Donald signed a newspaper article for me that hangs in my bow room.
