Been trying to figure out how to silence my "string groove" noise on some of my recurves and was wondering if anyone knows how to do the mountain muffler "puffs"? I make my own strings and would like to learn how to do this. I'd rather try this than padding the limbs. Any information would be appreciated.

I tied on some 'floating yarn' I had in my fly-tying kit, wrapped it and tied it off. (Using floss.) Covers the entire area where the string meets the limb.

Not pretty (especially in this color combo) but it works.

Actually, covers the area where the string might "slap".

On other bows I've simply installed sticky-back velcro fuzz.

You can tie 4 small puffs and slide them up to the point where the string contacts the limb.

After a few shots they will puff out nicely. You can still move them to adjust if needed. Here's the URL for a full "How To". https://www.tradtalk.com/threads/nuthatchs-diy-string-muffler.142494/

I know. I bought a raw fleece and built at least a 100 to get the process down.

What Okiak said, I believe they’re just basically a tightly bunched and trimmed puff

Not sure what the silencers look like that you are talking about but it works really well to just wrap yarn around the string from right below the string loop to just past where the string leaves the limb.

I hope Steve Baker keeps building strings for a very long time! The wool I got on my last string was the nicest one yet.

Is Steve back building strings?

I wrap mine as Danac does but i wrap mine thicker and completely up to the loop, i have it on every bow i own, zero issues definitely quiter...

Patrick, I thought of going higher but a) I'd rather keep the string groove clear and b) it works well enough as is.

This is a Morrison Max 1 limb with lots of upper curve to it, maybe on a more conventional limb more wrapping would work better (?)

Patrick - the area where Okiak has placed the muffler is the greatest source of recurve string slap noise. Little to none from there to the loop in the string grooves. Same with the super curve limbs - most bowyers do not want you padding the grooves themselves.
