Leatherwallers,
I am offering up some gear and help for an Idaho elk hunt. Wall tent, cots, stove etc are included (or camper). I can also point you to a few units/areas to hunt where I have encountered elk (dependent on your fitness).
I am no guide and might not be able to go with you-I am only offering this to help someone (or small party out.) If you have always wanted to hunt the west, but found it out of reach because of equipment costs etc- maybe this will get you there.
In exchange-you can buy me one Hershey dark chocolate bar (per person).
Also, there are some good chances of bear encounters as well.

Although I would not be able to go, I just want to say thank you for your offer. Because of your generosity this will be the hunt of a lifetime for a couple grateful Leatherwallers.

I have been told Idaho is told Idaho is sold out of non-resident tags. I know last year they where sold out of tags by August 1 when residents can buy an extra tag at nonresident prices.

The Sawtooth zone sells out quickly, but there are several areas that remain open (some for good reason though-low success rates). It really depends on the kind of hunt you are looking for.

Hunted Idaho last year and tags sold out early. Guess price increase hasn't slowed anyone down. Good to see.

I hunted Idaho many years.
I called them in January and they explained to me that licenses go on sale in December and there is no group application process.
The chance of two people hunting a known zone are slim at best. Three guys maybe not.
She told me the server can only handle so much traffic and whoever gets thru first wins, as an individual.
For those of you that have not been to Idaho, you will find that many gates are chained shut by ranchers that are supposed to be public access thru BLM land. The next access can be 5 or 10 miles down the road. The fish and game does nothing about it. They just bank your money.
They will tell you to call the sheriff. The sheriff will tell you they are busy. I tell you this from personal experience. Idaho thanks you for your money..
A couple of us wanted to go this year and couldn't get thru in time.
If you are a solo hunter, you have a chance. Just like ebay sniping.

We have been hunting Idaho public land every year possible since 2000. 4 of us would buy our tags sometime between Jan and Sept. One year I killed a cow on the first day of the hunt, packed it out and went to town and bought the last unsold tag for the unit and I hunted 2 more weeks.
This year I am going solo because I was the only one of our group to get a tag. They sold out in minutes. The liscence system is difficult now if not corrupt.

On the day the liscence went on sale I logged in ten min early and they gave me a "spot in line". I was number 3000 or something like that. My wife logged in after me on her computer under my account number and they gave me another place in line number 300. Explain that?? I had about an hour and a half wait, she had about a ten minute wait. I got my liscence but things just don't seem to add up.

Nice offer Bipolar. I am from Idaho it is frustrating with access in some areas. Here is a problem we have large companies are buying up private land and soon access is stopped. My favorite area for mule deer hunting has been bought out by a Utah sheep ranch first thing they done is blocked off all access to public land. I hunted that land as a child so it is very frustrating. On the other hand we do have some landowners that open up access to their land thru Idaho Fish and Game program called Access Yes. Our big game populations have taken losses last few years thru wolf expansion, drought in some areas, politics in mountain lion population, and winter kill in mule deer populations. By the way I have never had a problem with out of state hunters they seem to have a better appreciation for hunting this state than some locals.

I think hunting everywhere is getting tougher-a problem with more people. Idaho has sure changed a lot in the last 20 years. BUT, if your willing to walk a little, it is not hard getting away fro people.
I am now a fan of Oregon’s choose your weapon system. I think it would lighten up the pressure and separate those that truly want archery vice those that take it for an extra opportunity, thereby giving the animals some space.

Eric, that's an awesome offer. Unfortunately Idaho sold out of the DAV tags in 20 minutes this year. I'm still trying to pull a controlled hunt tag, otherwise I'm priced out for this year. I just want to commend you on a super generous offer. Thank you sir.

This is awesome! I plan on going to Colorado in a couple years with my best friend from high school to elk hunt. We have talked about trying to go to a different western state every couple years as money allows. I have been to Idaho and it’s a beautiful state maybe we can take you up on this soon.

Generous offer. ID really screwed out of state hunters and tags are no longer easy to get as stated. It is a big investment to hunt and I’ll be spending my money elsewhere I guess. Shame. I really likes hunting there.

As an Idaho guy, I'll say this...
Local residents were tired of going to an area and having it overrun with non resident hunters. They complained to the F&G and basically the F&G decided to spread out the congestion. They decided on a cap system, limiting the available non resident tags to an area based on a percentage of previous years tags sold. It seems an equitable way to spread out the hunting pressure. Idaho doesn't have the elk and deer numbers of other western states and a lot of Idaho is hard to get to...so people tended to congest the easier areas to hunt. Although this spread out the hunting pressure by non residents, it's made the desirable hunting zones very sought after and those tags go very quickly. After the initial burst of hunters buying tags, the available tags go by by at a slower pace. However, the tags are usually all sold out in a couple of weeks and if you want to hunt Idaho as a non resident, you have to plan very early.
If you were to buy a tag when they are first available and then life changes and you cannot go, you can always turn the tag back in. The biggest thing is planning and buying a tag in November for a fall hunt the next year. To me, that is a normal thing for people to plan at least that early when they are hunting other states like Alaska, but Idaho enjoyed a long history of high numbers of over the counter tags available to non resident hunters and that has now changed.

Very nice offer, but forgive me if I think going on a remote hunt in BEAR country, with a dude that I don’t know, who’s name is Bipolar, might not be the smartest thing I have every done...
Just kidding with you! Absolutely a VERY GENEROUS offer! I hope you are able to help someone out!

Sunset Hill, what you stated makes sense. The biggest problem for non residents is it's nearly impossible to hunt Idaho with a friend or two. The odds of one guy getting a tag in the first few minutes of the tags going on sale are slim, let alone three guys. I hate to say it but a preference point system would be better. We could plan on going as a group every 2 or 3 years
I'll be going solo this year and I'm looking forward to it but some day soon I'll be too old to pack a bull out of the back country by myself.
By the way, the locals that complain about out of staters forget that my taxes pay for that land too.

Yep, yours and other non resident's extra dollars paid for a lot of our game management, no doubt. A lot of residents felt for many years that Idaho catered to the higher dollar non res fees, and the res hunters got the leftovers so to speak. Not everywhere but particularly the best hunting zones. When there was no cap, it was very common to have more Non res than res hunters in those zones. Utah hunters were particularly plentiful because they were close by, and their point systems created a difficult hunting situation taking years to draw tags. So for a 4 hour drive and an otc tag, they flooded certain zones. That crowding situation needed to be spread out more fairly. Now, Non res hunters can still buy tags in buddy groups, but it's difficult in the popular area zones. Best bet is to find hard to access zones. They get sold out last because it's hard to get a orv into them.
