Saw this on the Bear Archery group. Someone has one. He was under impression it came with MRE until the video was posted. Interesting indeed. Guess in survival training pilots were showed about making a bow and arrow?

Mostly used on a small spear for catching fish and snakes. We where given LLRP rations at the end of '66. My biggest objection was valuable water was needed to eat it. Water was too valuable in 100+ temps. I stuck to my old ham and eggs C rats.

Makes sense, you could use the bleeder slot to tie it on. It's small compared to a Pearson DH which is the only other 2 blade I can think of right now that would allow you to tie it on.

Crazy.....I really don't see much I could do with it without my bow other than put it on a long stick.....its crazy how some items just prove the saying..."if it ain't broke don't fix it!". Still a great briadhead. Thanks for sharing I enjoyed that. I also saw a you tube channel where some crazy guy is eating M.R.E. meals from as far back as ww1.

I would envision it with a short stick (or sticks) handle hafted on it using paracord string strands for cutting purposes, rather than an emergency arrow for an emergency bow for one shot that would be just about as accurate as we all imagine. Maybe a frog gigger or fishing spear. With the snares pictured, I think it would be more needed as a small emergency knife for all the reasons we all carry one.
Who would have thought...very interesting.

Well, having been over there and worked with pilots in the AF I find it hard to believe that most of them would have known how to have done much with it. It would be interesting to know what their training told them to do with it.

"Self Defense vs an AK47 armed enemy searching for a downed pilot would be useless."
Not intended for self defense.
In fact, first rule for a downed pilots or a grunt separated from his unit is to avoid contact with the enemy. They are trained in E&E (Escape & Evasion), became SERE in 'Nam (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) but the first rule still remained the same ...avoid contact with the enemy.

Zbone, I thought it may be beveled, too, on first glance. But it is the way the light is hitting the plastic covering on the vertical edge I think.

I'm guessing Bear Archery was involved in supplying the bows & arrows for Special Forces archers in the mid 60's so the Bear broadhead was a logical pick to be added to military pilot survival kits.

Only one? Dont know. Id have at least 2. Some of the survival "experts" on the internet recommend a couple of glue on heads in your kit but drill a small hole in the ferrule to help you fix it to a wood spear shaft, or keep a small piece of hot-melt in your kit. At least then, you have a chance of collecting a rat, bird, rabbit, frog or fish to give you some protein. Its an interesting idea.
