One less thing to worry about forgetting when you head into the woods. I shoot with a glove but usually take a few shots everyday without my glove just in case (I've been known to forget things). I've always had fairly tough hands and fingers so it works.
Happy shooting to you!

I was in my treestand, the last day before firearms season, I had been on stand from before sun up to mid afternoon and had given up hope, had my hat off and gloves, lit a smoke and was getting ready to take down the stand and heard a grunt. Biggest 8 point I had ever seen was sneaking on a trail to my side with his nose in the waterery trail. Grabbed my bow off the branch and had one little window through the thick stuff, took the shot with a 70# browning, knocked the smoke out of my mouth, and the arrow went right over him crashing through the thick branches.
He looked up for a second, put his nose back in the water (as I nocked another arrow), and it walked into a clear spot and stood sideways on a mound about 20 yrds behind me. Looked like the hartford insurance commercial. I burnt a spot with my eyes and made a perfect barehanded shot.

I could not imagine shooting 100 shots a day without glove/tab. I would not want to come into blisters on my shooting fingers that would hinder my shot when hunting season comes. If you can, go for it.

I shot my bows, including my compound at 80#, barehanded for almost 20 years. I didn't know about tabs and gloves back then. But, I shot with a pinch draw. Never had a callous from shooting, I do get one on the side of my ring finger from pulling arrows. I'm not holding the string when I loose so I don't get any of the ripping down my fingertips. When I got back into archery, I saw people shooting 3 under, I had never seen that before, so I made my first tab and tried it. Well, not 3 under since I only have 2 that work. Still, so much easier!

I used to triple serve strings for a friend of mine. He used a glout ve for practice but hunted bare handed with triple served string. Ppl ersonally I never wanted to add the weight where ut hurts most.

Not for me thanks. Knew a fellow who damaged nerves in his middle finger so bad he had to switch hands to shoot. You may get by with it though with thicker padding on serving.

I've killed a couple of nice bucks shooting bare fingered, but only because I had misplaced or lost my glove or, more recently, tab. I can shoot a few arrows bare fingered, but not my preference. And I'm too old to try to toughen up my fingers. Tab for me now. I'm sure to always carry one or two extra in my pack.

I used to shoot with bare string fingers just in case I was ever without my glove, but only ever lost it once in 40 years, so I think I'll be ok from here on out. Plus I have some scars now that really don't like shooting without some protection.
The calluses on my left hand from playing guitar are much thicker. I have to sand them down once in a while. Playing too many Stevie Ray Vaughan songs will do that. I could probably shoot without a glove if I shot left handed :^)

Taught my special needs brother (49 years old this week) to shoot a recurve during covid, and was struggling terribly with the glove and tab, just couldn't make them work for him. His finger dexterity is terrible. Instead of correcting him constantly and helping him get the tab layers together and such, I just put those cool little rubber gripper tabs on his string and made him shoot bare handed.
Worked great reduced his frustration with shooting. He is begging to come home from the group home every weekend. There are too many women in charge, at the group home and he gets sick of it, but his mom tells him that is not appropriate to say so his excuse for coming home was he wants to shoot his bow.
I joined a stickbow league this winter, and we shot league together instead of joining a bowling league. That was a blessing for me, reduced my commitment a bunch. The other shooters in the league enjoyed him a bunch, and we had fun. The first week he hit the target once and got a score of two. He was shooting with me, so I scored it and turned in his card. The second week one of the guys offered to shoot with him, and he shot a 26??? I asked the guy what the heck he didn't improve that much, and the response was sure he did they were all legitimate scores, just not all on his target, they had scored for him no matter whos target he had hit.
He thought he was ready for olympic archery.

That is AWESOME Mr. Oz! I tried the bare danger than her....and didn't like it. Had struggled getting by with gloves for years....then buckled down to trying a tab. Eventually started making my own. That led me to modifications which prevent tab interference with nocks at release(you'd be surprised...or not). Anyway, I think you should protect your digits.

First of all the bow is lighter than I normally shoot. The string is 30 strands of vec 99 with .022 crown serving which makes a nock fit for classic. I feel a little pressure on the string angle on the top finger but with a third finger release I feel nothing. On a heavy bow I wear glove or Barbee tab. Great story on the special needs person I remember when it was a struggle learning. Rooty

Not for me either. That's one of the reasons I own 5 or 6 tabs. Extra in my truck, quiver pocket, and my fanny pack. I rotate so they're all shot in about the same.

Jeff Durnall, I can see 11's on a Strat as being testy to bend ala SRV. I learned to play in the 50's when there was just hillbillys....the rockabilly....then rock and roll. But mostly, I was a fan of Merle Travis and Chet Atkins so it's mostly life below the 12th fret. :)

fdp, I don't remember who used yarn on their bowstring. Back in the late 1960s and the 1970s I remember some guys using the black electrical tape, and some also used the rubber No-Glov ( pictured ). I can shoot the same with or with out a glove. But I prefer a glove.

Fine difference I made a string for this bow with my normal 30 strand bloodline 99 and .024 halo. These strands do not have vectran on them and is a thinner string. I mich prefered the tab on this string. Rooty

I've got a nasty scar on the ring finger of my string hand from where I got it caught in the meat saw at work many years ago. I don't plan on ever shooting bare handed because of it, but, given the right situation, one never knows.

I normally shoot practice or 3D with regular style 3 finger stall archery glove. I like a regular thin material glove with very thin leather palm and inside fingers. I have some that are non-insulated and some that have 40 gram thinsulate that I use for hunting. If needed I can shoot once or twice bare fingers, but would not do it on a regular basis.

Just a quick update on the Special needs brother shooting bare handed.
He did make it home this weekend to shoot his bow, and shot quite well. He is getting better. But he was shooting with my dad, and when they were done He went into a mode of talking himself through some sort of issue. It is a frequent thing when he has an issue he starts walking around the yard talking to himself with palms up type of attitude... it is obvious when something is bothering him.
anyways dad went in for lunch and he stayed outside talking to himself, finally he came in for lunch and mom and dad knowing something was up put lunch in front of him and started quizzing him whats up?.
As the story went, this week is camp promise where he and a other residents of the group home get invited to a local bible camp for a couple of nights. He knows at the camp they will have an archery session where they get to shoot, and he didn't know how to ask to take his own bow and arrows. He knows the group home will not allow him to have his archery equipment at the home and he was problem solving how to get his bow and arrows to camp.
Anyways, moral of the story, he loves his bow and arrows, we have created another obsessive stickbow monster.
Thanks for all the feedback people gave me about the original post, Life circumstances have made me a blessed individual.
