Hey guys this year I’ve been messing with making turkey calls. This ones a glass over box turtle. Sounds decent. I’ve got cedar maple and bamboo as strikers. Let’s see you’re calls.

My grandpa Freeman made the one on the top center.. He was from Southern Missouri. He used cedar from his farm. The one below the top one he made from a yardstick. It did not work so well. Pretty much a dead sound. But I had to have it when I found it after he died and we cleaned out the farm. But the other ones did awesome, which I made. Rib bone with chalk and hollow box. I think he was way ahead of his time. JF

Wow thanks for sharing those look really neat. I’ve got some cedar I’ve been clearing for a driveway I’ll have to save some and give it a try. How is the rib bone used? I wonder how someone figured out that a box with a lid and some chalk would make a sound like a turkey?

Bodymanbowyer gotcha old family secret ;p definitely cool though would love to hear one some day. Wow guys you make my calls look really crude.

Those are great looking grizzley21. I’ve never seen a call like the second one does that curved bottom give it a different sound definitely pretty.

White falcon I was going to make one of those today but the dog beat me to it when I left the bones on the counter over night. Dang but I’ve got another wing to boil so no big loss.

Aeronut that copper call look great. How does coppers sound differ from slate or glass?

That old call is neat Matt T I like those calls made for utility. That thing was made to call birds rain or shine no frills attached.

I know some guys will laugh, but couldn't afford a pot call so where I live there's lots of slate laying around for free. Found a broken maple branch and tapered one end with a razor knife. I took some 80 grit to the slate and got it flat but with some "tooth" to it. Tried it out two days ago. In the first 20 minutes I had two toms come by at 25 to 30 yards. I was just playing around to see if it would work so I was in the open. Both saw me but still...once I am hidden in a natural blind...it'll be a different story then.

A few of my white calls.

Yellah nocks I bet it’d add to the sound since there’s no sound board to create a sound chamber with your body by cupping it while you use it. Worth a try

Here’s a partial pic, no trumpets shown. Just moved and they’re Mia right now. There is a Mark Sharp cane call to left. Watkins, Dawkins, McKamey, Platz, SS, Schafer, MAC, Blackstone, Basehore, Strawser, Halloran, Harrison, Gibson, etc etc. When I find trumpets I’ll post them

Nice calls got a Ben Lee Roger's super hen call. Also got a wingbone with rattle snake wraps.

From: Yellah Nocks

Foggy Mountain....yes. it. Does. Sounds awesome and seems to have that "bite" to the sound that echoes well. Just light cackling and putting sounds a LOT lighter....just like a hen.

Here is mine, believe it or not these turtle shell calls are illegal in most states because the turtles are protected.

I only use mine on private land where I know I won't run into a game warden. The thinking is that some Bozo will kill a live turtle just for its shell to make a call and I a sure there are some brain dead folk out there that would. I have found a pile of empty turtle shells in the woods over the year, they do make a good call.

From: Aeronut

Bowmann. I make calls with slate, aluminum, and copper tops. All have a glass resonator in them and each has a slightly different sound. The biggest factors in sound are the thickness of the wood, size of the sound holes, and what kind of wood the striker is made out of. How the user holds the striker will affect sound too.

Eric. Here in Kansas hunting private land won't keep you from getting a visit from a warden. They can go anywhere.

Foggy Mountain, I have a Basehore slate too, and find it to be perfect for soft tree yelps first thing before fly down. My striker is a corn cob top with what I'm guessing to be cedar stick which he made. Makes very soft calls.

Lot's of nice calls fella's. Yeller I've got an old Ashby box call just like yours, got it from Ike back in the 80's when I use to hunt on a friends Dad's place down in Houston Mo..

Big striped. That’s cool. I got mine in 75. It’s scratched in the bottom when I got out of Corp in 74 my dad gave it to me. He had a lunch and this one. It still sounds great. Called in many MO turkey Be safe this spring

Very nice bugle up. Baseshore makes a great scratcher as well. I very commonly start most mornings anymore with a scratcher for exactly the soft sounds you’re describing. Years back I started using them and it seems I use them more and more.
