Just wanted to know how far some of you place your fletch below the nock, any reason why you place the fletch there?

From: Desperado
Date: 01-Apr-21

Just as far as I need so my drawing fingers don't touch the feathers when they grip the string. I have it marked on my clamp but actually never measured it

Just like Des does it. When I learned to fletch arrows I was taught the closer the fletching is to the back end of the arrow the better job it does stabilizing the arrow.

Don't know if it's true but that's how I've always done it.

My clamps are marked too, but I go pretty tight. 1/2" from feather to nock, 1 1/2" from feather to end of nock. Just what I do, Ive seen alot farther away

Yep, enough to fit my fingers. Marked on the Bitz clamps also.

Yes, the farther back the feather the more stability it provides, but a quarter inch or so doesn't make much difference, not enough so most would notice.

I too place the feathers far enough forward that I don't hit them with my fingers when I put my fingers around the bow string and nock -- that's about 1 1/8-inch from the throat of the nock.

I had mine marked so my fletching touched my nose at one point. Finger clearance was good as well. I can’t remember the measurement. 3/4 inch?

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

just far enough

Just right to touch my nose at full draw. >>>----> Ken

Half inch from the base of the nock, seems to work, probably not important in my world, just looks good

Ditto on half inch.

From: Trad Rick

Just far enough for fingers to fit.

Same as above, I think I have the second or third ruler mark on the clamp highlighted for consistency. (If I *remembered* I wouldn't have to mark it ;-) )

To fit my fingers.

1" from throat of nock. Rooty

I would have to measure. With my fletching jig clamp all the way forward till it hits the fixture. I have sausages that ya'll would call fingers. Too many big stones and rock hammers have flattened over the years. John

The little 90 degree notch on my jojan clamp just happens to be the exact spot to place the rear most portion of the fletch. This way I don't have to think about it(which is a good thing when it concerns my skillset).

From: George D. Stout

I never measured it in all my years in archery, just what looked proper. I just mark my clamp and everything gets done with that mark.

From: Clydebow
Date: 02-Apr-21

Same as 2 bears "Just right to touch my nose at full draw. " Have a mark on my clamp.

From: reddogge
Date: 02-Apr-21

Mine's marked about 1/2" from where the nock touches the arrow.

From: Wild Bill
Date: 02-Apr-21

For hunting arrows I want the fletch to not touch my face with a scritching sound. Sometimes when the arrow slides across the side plate it is enough noise to alarm deer, thus not good.

From: GUTPILEPA

I mark my clamp so when I draw the feather is at the corner of my mouth at full draw

Thank you all for your comments. I too have my Bitz marked from when I was able to use fingers, now must use a release so was just wondering. Guess I will just continue to use the mark that has been there for over 50 years.

a little further than I think I need for my fingers. The last thing I want to do it nick a feather with my finger or tab when I am drawing on my next monster buck.

I use a feather to the nose also.I am surprised to see so many that use the feather to the nose technique.....Ive never noticed it making any noise but guess it could though...

I don’t know how far it is. I figured it out years ago for finger clearance and haven’t changed it. My clamps are marked so each feather is consistent and also it’s set for my feather burner also. Works for me.

Just far enough forward so the tip of the shield-cut feather doesn't poke my upper lip. I hate that.

From: Jarhead
Date: 02-Apr-21

Forward as far as my jig allows. I don't like it when the feathers touch my face... distracts me.

From: Geezer

I put mine at 7/16. I have purchased finished arrows from 3Rivers, which are also 7/16. I suspect I am maybe measuring incorrectly and that they might all be 8/16. 1/2 inch.

Years ago autumn orange xx75 aluminum arrows use to have a taper just in front of the the silver nock taper. Don't know how far that was but I set the rear of my fletches right at the crest of that taper and marked my clamp and that is where all my arrows are fletched to this day. Real scientific unhhhh :'). DANNY

I shoot 2 fingers under with my index finger lightly resting on the top of the shaft. I put a one inch space between the base of the nock and the back of the fletch although 5/8" will work.

Do you have any other arrows around. Look at them and measure them or stick in your clamp on your vise and mark clamp. Once you have your clamp marked you will be ok thereafter. You can even scribe the clamp this way you cant go wrong and it get wiped off.

Make sure you dap glue on the point end of feathers once on the arrow. So the feather don't go into your hand.

For me, it's 2 and 3/16 inches. That's right. Not a typo.

Why so long? Because I anchor high and back (on my cheekbone), to lengthen my draw. The feathers, if normally placed, cut my cheek. With almost daily shooting, it never heals.

Where I have the feathers, the problem goes away. And the arrows are as stable in flight as anyone's.

I use the first taller mark on my Bitz clamp, plenty of finger clearance and I could theoretically trim a little off the back of the arrow if I needed too for tuning and still have finger clearance!

From: crookedstix
Date: 06-Apr-21

David Ellenbogen once shared his opinion that most people place the feathers too close to the nock to get optimal flight. The arrows I bought from him always had well over an inch of clearance between nock and fletching...I'll measure it when I get home tonight.

I'll look forward to hearing Aromakr and Kelly's thoughts on this topic; lots of experience between those two.
