Do you ever flame-darken arrow shafts or bows? Just wondering how popular this is compared to staining and how you do it. Have any pics?

I burned a barber pole effect on these arrows I made a long time ago. After I burned them I stained them and they came out a bit different.

Darren, those are beautiful, you're an amazing craftsman!
Yankee, I've never done arrows but I've done other wood for projects with a simple hand held torch. I'm not the most talented or artistic guy but I thought it was pretty easy and simple when I did it.

A pig destroyed this one last season, I always wanted to try flame cresting Darren but I don’t think I have the patience.

Probably one of the few things I haven’t tried. I remember those flame crestor devices offered some years back. The old timers in the club used to flame the whole shaft. But it was more to break up the outline of the light colored shafts when hunting.

Pretty cool you guys. I think I'm going to go to flaming instead of staining shafts. I like the look of it.

No, it shouldn't harm the arrow shaft as long as it is lightly done. it's just for looks anyway.

also use a wide tip on the torch and move fast with several strokes. the pencil tip is way too finicky.
