Well, it seems I cannot go to woods at the moment. I need 85 spine wood arrows according to Stu's Calculator. Bear Super K, 50# @ 28". My draw, 31". This is fine, but there currently out of stock all over for this spine of arrow, Douglas Fir, POC, Ash, etc. What gives? Covid?

85-90 woodies are very unpopular and not many are made. Most places making them are "special order" at that size. It seems most stop stocking around 75-80.

I was looking at 80 - 85 which a lot of company's offer, just out of stock.

forest wood shafts will have arrows for you they can make them up to 35" shaft if needed and 100# spine

11/32 80/90 spine leopard wood in stock over 600 gr and 40.00 something a dozen.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 25-Mar-21

Kind of spendy? I know I can't complain, but $80.00/12? I was hoping for douglas fir. I emailed sherwood to see if and when they would have more.

That price quoted above is per 1/2dozen,

Leopard Wood - 6 Shafts - Hardwood Arrow Shafts - 11/32" Diameter - Spine 80-90# - 630-650 grains

Forrester Wood Shafts

From $ 40.00

If you feel like its something you will be "into" for more than a blink I would suggest buying a dowel maker and making your own shafts.

John, Surewood shafts are cut to 32". This might be to short for what you are needing. I talked with Carson a week or so ago and they may be going to try to produce longer shafts in the future.

Wapiti cuts theirs to 33" and Trueshaft Archery cut's theirs to 34". The spine that you are needing is the biggest problem . . . hard to come by . . .

Yes, thought about cutting my own. Another thought is the footed shaft has some 80-85's cut to 30". I may just have to learn to foot the shafts and extend them, which I would like also. Again, long draw sucks.

From: PEARL DRUMS

Long draws only suck when arrow troubles come around, otherwise they are powerhouses. I pull 30" and love the way bows perform as a result.

Call Truesfaft archery. He uses SitkaSpruce. His arrows are 34" long with 80 percent grain integrity for premiums like the days of acme. The only "true" premium shaft you will consistantly find now days. All hand split. He was 36 bucks a doz last I ordered. Check out his website and also search his video on making shafts.

As for spine weights. They are not made, they're grown. You make 11/32 or 23/64 and the spines that come from them are a crapshoot. This guy used giant standing dead trees so he's your best bet.

I stop using wood when raminwood was not available anymore. 31.2" draw @ 70# translates to something like 110/120# spine.

PMed you. 32” draw here. Working the same problem.

From: Sunset Hill
Date: 25-Mar-21

Am I missing something here?

If your draw is 28" bop, then the total shaft length is 29" including what's in the head. Drawing 31" or shaft length 32" is 4" longer than the 28" standard. 4" extra shaft equals 20# spine weight if using 125 gr. heads. So your typical shaft spine would be 70-75# spine range. If you go to a 150 gr. head you'll need a 75-80# spine range. This should be very close and these are readily available in cedar or fir.

My draw is 31" and BOB is 32". The weight of the bow is 50# @ 28". I'm drawing 56# + as there seems to be more stacking on that bow.

From: fdp
Date: 25-Mar-21

Live2Hunt if that bow is 50 at 28 and only 56 at 31 that seems to be pretty smooth. Just doing a quick calculation.

From: fdp
Date: 25-Mar-21

Meaning I've seen much worse. (hit enter too quick)

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 25-Mar-21

Well, I haven't weighed it yet to know exact but that would be pretty close. It has a noticeable stack when when I get back.

Live2Hunt, you may want to pm aromakr (Bob Burton) on this site. He's a wealth of information and may have contacts that have not been mentioned.

If the bows 50@28 and he's pulling 31 on a sk thats roughly 58lb. If his arrows 32 thats a 78lb spine on an asl and 83 on a recurve. Plus 5 more for non stretch string.

From: Bootaka
Date: 25-Mar-21

Honestly, it was the only real reason I got rid of my MAII. Finding arrows for a 70@32 was making me sad. I had go carbon .240 with near 400 grains of the front to make spine and 10gpp.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 26-Mar-21

Well, good thing it that Carson at Sherwood said he has some high spine shafts maybe coming but 4 - 6 weeks out. Bad thing is as I was looking at an email from him, I noticed weird emails in my inbox from strange places. So, evidently my email has been sabotaged. Computer age is nice but very odd for sure.

Is your SK a 60” or 64” bow? Bow length makes a difference in stack. My guess is your SK is closer to 60# at 31”. If you want a 32” bop arrow then you need 33” shafting. 85-90 spine sounds about correct.

I’d suggest 2219 in aluminums.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 26-Mar-21

It is a 60" and yes like I stated above you can notice the stacking. I currently sort of have it tuned for 300 spine Aluminums with 145 grains up front 32" bop.

From: Kelly
Date: 26-Mar-21

The 60” version will most likely be over 60#.

300 spine aluminum is the same as 2216, 86.66# spine.

From: Rick
Date: 26-Mar-21

don't now but when adding weight to nock end increases spine? could you use a nail weight system on the nock end and epoxy them in? add nail before tapering. 3 river sales the tool needed.

From: Rick
Date: 26-Mar-21

also with bow weight and arrow weight you are shooting, going down to 100gr would not affect penetration, and would be a plus to arrow flight down range.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 26-Mar-21

I will have to play with the wood arrows when/if I can get them. Right now the 300 spine aluminums with 145 up front tuned decent and work so if I have to use them, so be it. I do have to say, the aluminum's tuned a hell of a lot better and easier than my carbins did for my other bow.

From: Rick
Date: 26-Mar-21

I shoot some 2314s with 200 up front and they where easy tuned also. I really don't care for carbons I have had them since the 90s, but I like aluminum and wood better, wood on my longbows.

My 80-84 sitka spruce are 32" and with a 160 ace head are 627gns or 640gns depending on which group. I even out slight weight differences with an extra coat of finish. You can get 33" arrow out of Trueshafts shafts.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 31-Mar-21

Well, another letdown. I was lined up with Sherwood to buy some shafts that would be ready in 4 - 6 weeks. But, he only makes 32" shafts, I need at least 33", dang. Oh well, I always wanted to dive into making footed shafts, may as well start now.
