Another attempt at a cresting using Sharpie markers. Going to buy some Testors model paint for my next cresting adventure.

Nice job Homey. I like Testors. Works good enough for my simple crests.

I have tried sharpies , oil base paint pens and the water based Elmer paint pens.

What I found with all of them is some colors work others not so much but I am a rookie at best when it comes to cresting.

I feel like the water based paint, thinned with water worked best for me to date.

My sharpies are starting to dry out some. So I will be looking into Testors.

Looks good! For the Testor's get a bottle of the thinner and some good camel or sable hair brushes, makes a ton of difference over the cheap brushes.

I totally agree with Wooddamon1. The brush you use makes a big difference.

nice and simple i like it. I've crested many hundreds of arrows. for broad bands of color on my primitive arrows i run a wide construction sized sharpie over the area i want colored, and rub in the color with a cloth dipped in lac thinner or acetone. That soaks the color in deep and gives a very nice primitive effect totally different than the typical precision crests i do with testors.

also if you use testors enamel apply it thin. put a few drops of thinner in a new bottle. you want it to flow off your cresting brush and flatten out immediately. If it wants to sag when the arrow is off the machine it is way the hell too thick. thin testors enamel flows on flattens out immediately and dries fast. also white undercoater or painting over a white cap gives the brightest colors.

Testors works really well. I’d have to see if they make a water based model paint but that’s my suggestion. Then dip 1-3 times depending on how thick it goes on in minwax spar urethane oil based. As I learned from experience and explained on here from Bob: do not mix your cap dip and cresting with your clear coat. I.e. choose water or oil based for cap and crest but you are obligated to use the opposite base for clear.

I had silver testors enamel streak slightly with oil spar urethane. Had a cool wet ink on paper run marks and the pearl glitter flakes were all over the shaft. Really cool looking! But not the look I was after. But a really interesting thing to mess around with to get a custom look, like marbled cap dips.

Has you tried the industrial version of the Sharpie marker, I believe it is more like paint than a marker.

No loose arrow , haven’t tried that. That’s a good idea. Will have to give it a try! Thanks!

I use sharpies for my cresting but I only use a black sharpie, another thing I always do is to run a coat of water based urethane over it, lasts forever or at least 15 years so far

Nice. The fine lines "snap" a crest job.
