Thinking about trying to make a self bow in the 35 to 40# range for 3D and stumping. I shoot light carbon arrows out of my Super Kodiak now. Would that be advise able out of a self bow?

Keep in mind that even the best quality self bow...ie weylin olive or ryan gill is going ti be quite a bit slower than a quality modern recurve.

most 3D shoots only allow wood/bamboo arrows in the selfbow class.

Not if a similar design is made.

Candyman, I made an osage selfbow that came in underweight and finished out at 35# @ my 28” draw. I bought some Warrior 700 shafts to shoot from it. Our local clubs are small enough that they only have 1 trad class so they don’t have any restrictions on bows or arrows. I have shot a couple of 3D shoots with it and really noticed it is far less forgiving of shooter error than my normal 45#-50# bows. It magnifies any bad form issues, bad release, etc., than a higher draw weight bow. But saying that, it can show you what you, the shooter needs to work on. If I go to any shoots that require wood arrows, I’ll just take some of my heavier draw bows.

Thanks for the help. I was wondering if the light weight carbons would damage a self bow because they are light in weight. I did not know that they made the ramin shafts light enough for a 35# bow.

I think the 700s I put together weigh about 335gr if I remember correctly. They came in just under 10ggp . So far they shoot great.

A self bow is a lot more tolerant of underweight arrows than a laminated bow.
Which is another way to flatter the available speed.

Just went down and measured and weighed one because my memory is always exact anymore lol. 30-1/2” back of point to throat of nock. 125 gr point, 3- 4” goose feathers. 7” rattle can white cresting. Total arrow weight 326 to 328 gr. Only 9.3 gpp. Told you my memory was slipping.

They will work if the spine is good. But you can get 5/16 Wood shafts with about 60-70 grain points and 3 -3” fletchings will give you good cast as long as the spine is right. Probably in the 320-350 grains just guessing. The hard core primitive won’t raise their eyebrows with the wood arrows. ????

How far are you shooting in a 3D shoot? Mostly it's under 30 yards with maybe a long shot in the mix. With a standard draw it should be relatively easy to reach 30 yards. I have a 43# Osage that will reach fifty with a point-on just at the top of the target. I shoot split and the arrows are actually about 11+ gpp.

I don’t consciously use a point on, but your right on 3D distance. With the above arrow weight shot from my 35# bow I don’t have to make any sight picture adjustments from my normal 45# to 50# bows. Arrows shot from them range between 435gr to 485gr. So all combinations fall around the 9gpp give or take. I can pick up any of my selfbows and shoot without having to make any mental adjustments at normal 3D ranges.

Shoot whatever arrows that you prefer that shoot well from your bow. Don’t worry if your arrow selection does not meet some club’s rules. In most cases you can still shoot, but your score is not turned in to win some ribbon or whatever award.
