Just finished this bow. Not too experienced with tillering this hard reflexed tip design. I’m pleased with its looks and its performance. To me I guess I should have worked the fades a bit more. I would’ve thought it would have taken a lot of set with this finished tiller but it was less than an inch. Do y’all see it the same way?

I would like to see a unbraced profile picture to, but from what I am seeing. Looks like you did pretty darn good.

When drawn I see the lower limb tip uncurling more than the upper.

Is the lower limb shorter

Spec’s are [email protected]”, 66”. I’ll get an unbraced pic.

Fine looking bow!!!

Lower limb is shorter. Another first for me. Normally I build symmetrical limbs.

looks like you did that piece of osage justice to me! good job buddy.

You nailed that one.

Looks great. Bottom limb looks like it is bending more towards the handle than the top limb, but it looks awesome.

From: Heat

I don't know a darn thing about building bows but that is very cool!

From: Yellah Nocks
Date: 02-Mar-21

Bowshot is correct regarding the diffy in limb bend. Put on a tiller tree with a graphed wall behind it, it would be easier to see. But I gotta say that that is a nice bow. I don't like skinny grips. Didn't like 'em on compounds, and even less on trads.

From: Yellah Nocks
Date: 02-Mar-21

For clarification...the grip there is just right.

From: 2 bears

I would be happy with it. >>>---> Ken

if it shoots good thats the most important thing,, learning to tiller is a work in progress,, we can always improve in some way,, but if the arrow flies good you are in the ball park,, the better the tiller fine tuning,, the longer the bow will last,, and more stable it will be,,and easier to tune,,, congrats on your bow,,

Great work. Beautiful bow. I’m not good enough to nit pick

From: Arvin

What justpassin said. Top outer limb is a bit stiff. Nice bow though.

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 02-Mar-21

Tiller looks very good. Jawge

From: KenWood
Date: 02-Mar-21

Thanks all. I was a bit reluctant to post it at all because I’m not used to tillering something with such dramatic flipped tips. It’s good to know it’s not too bad. It’s right at the weight I wanted so I’m gonna leave it there. It shoots great too.

From: Orion Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Nice specs and good looking bow. I agree that the top limb is a bit stiffer than the bottom.

From: Randog
Date: 02-Mar-21

Looks good to me, nice job.

From: Runner
Date: 02-Mar-21

Those are not dramatic flipped tips. I think the tips are curved a bit differently from the get go which makes it seem like the lower is flattening out more at full draw. It's already flatter.

Unbraced. Looking from this angle it is starting to take some set. Especially in that bottom limb. Still shoots though. Just flung around a hundred shots out of it.

Great job on that bow. Congrats!

Lower limb looks weaker in pic. But hey if it shoots good. Well done.

That is one sweet looking bow, way better than ones Ive made!

From: D.Lewis aka tonto59

That’s one to be proud of. I really like what you did with the handle. Very cool.

From: Stoner
Date: 03-Mar-21

When I build with the centerline 1" up the top limb usually has a 1/4" more bend. Well done sir, very nice profile. John

From: KenWood
Date: 03-Mar-21

Once again thanks for the kind words. This bow’s top limb is 2” longer than the bottom. The bottom limb is bending more but in mind it had to to even up with the top?

From: Bob
Date: 04-Mar-21

Nice bow. Every time I see a high wrist grip on a selfbow it me want to try it. Still haven't gotten around to it yet. maybe you inspired me. Enjoy your bow!

From: Eric Krewson
Date: 04-Mar-21

The bottom limb looks a little weak, your brace picture shows this with the top limb being stiffer than the bottom. A little scraping out from the fade out about 6" should correct this.

Other than that your tiller is good.

I would correct this imbalance because bottom limb, especially shooter ones take more stress than the top and will only get weaker as you shoot the bow in.

I make shorter lower limbs on my bows, I can start out dead even on the tiller for both limbs and often have to take a little off the top limb to get the limbs balanced after shoot-in. It is always the bottom limb that goes weak.

From: Eric Krewson
Date: 04-Mar-21

I use a tillering gizmo so my limbs have a very even tiller. I match limbs at brace by measuring 12" from where the string hits the limb at the tip then measure the distance from the string to the limb and match this measurement up by scraping and exercising the strong limb. Gizmo checks will insure I don't make any weak spots while I scrape. Another thing, I shoot split finger and want my top limb 1/8" positive most of the time.

If you have a lot of character in the limbs this method is less effective, a gizmo is not going to be much use as well.

From: KenWood
Date: 04-Mar-21

Thanks Eric I will give that a try.

And here’s what it’s all for. The bow came out after shoot in and final tiller adjustments to 41 pounds at 28”. I draw 30” so around 46 pounds. Pass through with ease.

I appreciate the kind words. I posted that hog pic as kind of closure to the build. I know how I’m gonna design bows from now on. I am using a 510 grain cedar arrow tipped with 160 grain grizzly broadheads. I’m not used to such a light bow so I built that arrow around maximum penetration. The bow is quick but I don’t have a chronograph to see how fast so I guess it’s just fast enough! Once again thanks a lot for the compliments.

KenWood, nice job and correction on the top fade.

Yes harvesting meat completes the build, I finished my Hickory bow, but had to use it on a destructive armadillo, oh well. My next one will bring home the bacon.

Thanks for the post Ken. We need more selfbow pictures on here. A selfbow that will hunt is all that you can ask of the wood and yourself. Great job.
