OK. This has turned into a couple year project but after maple syrup season is over I am finishing a longbow I started made from IPE.
Question: I have some really nice, heavy and dense african yellow wood (at least that's what my neighbor called it) in house. Being somewhat frugal I wondered if I planed it down would it make a good backing. Thought it would also look pretty good with the IPE.
Since there are a bunch of smarter bow builders than I, what say you?

HA. Neither do I but it sure is yellow. Maybe once home this evening I will post a picture. Straight grained and super dense. Heavy stuff.

If you do some research it appears that if it is South African Yellow Wood it appears that it is protected.

Its probably yellow heart. No, it wont make a backing. You will want to use hickory, maple, healthy ash or bamboo. You could use it as a thin center lam if you want to build a tri lam.

Ipe is an oily wood. I am not saying you can't back it; just that it is not friendly to backing like say hickory or elm.

Just use EA40 and its better than just fine. I've made many backed ipe bows. Hickory and bamboo.
