Don't need a long thread j u st wanted to repeat what a gentleman told me this morning. He said the way he handles a noisy black widow is to turn his hearing aids down.

From: Blake1084
Date: 25-Feb-21

I change the string.

From: Stuart
Date: 25-Feb-21

Change the strings/silencers and shoot heavier arrows.

From: GROUNDHOG
Date: 25-Feb-21

Brace height, string, silencers

From: fdp
Date: 25-Feb-21

The best bow hunter I ever knew shot BW' s for years, and his were as quiet as any bow.

From: Crow#2
Date: 25-Feb-21

Mine is just fine after tuning. I just got a chuckle about the hearing aid is the only reason I posted

From: Frisky

In late March, I'm hoping to put out the best brush buttons ever made. If your brace height is set right, these buttons will eliminate the need for string silencers. First tests were promising.

I've been toying with the idea of taking a stack of bows, tune them to different notes, and play a song.

If I use an arrow as a bow, what does that make the bow? Maybe just pluck the strip, I'm already good that that.

From: Therifleman
Date: 25-Feb-21

I shoot a PCHX thats very quiet. I've done nothing special with tuning, stock D97 string and what's left of the spider string silencers. Just my experience.

I have experience with a noisy widow. I ask her to turn down her stereo.

There are other endings to the joke above.. fill in your own :)

So Crow 2 you got your new widow already. Let's see some pictures. JF

My PSAX is plenty quiet

From: sqrlgtr
Date: 25-Feb-21

I shoot 3 under and believe all my bows are just as quiet as any Ive been around.I have went to installing yarn puffs at the length/6 and length/10 method and am a firm believer in this formula. It has worked on three different widows I've applied it to...This is after I get brace height set and arrows tuned...

From: Big-D
Date: 25-Feb-21

Hey Frisky I’m all ears as well.

From: jimwright
Date: 25-Feb-21

Not to be a contrarian but I've been around a number of black widow bows that were not quiet. And there's something to the fact that there are posts regularly here about how to quiet them with numerous b.w. owners offering advice on how to.

From: HEXX
Date: 25-Feb-21

I'am told the phenolic is noisy compared to all wood. I shot a demo KB that was really noisy so I put four string leeches at 10" and 14" and it cut the noise in half.

From: fdp
Date: 25-Feb-21

My experience is that Phenolic is more quiet than wood in any riser. It is heavier and more dense.

From: babysaph Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

Well we know that isn’t true. Widows are the best

From: 2 bears

You don't have one do you? I don't have a problem with mine. >>>---> Ken

From: Rick

I have had 5 and all are quiet. but I don't shoot soda straws either.

From: Scoop Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

I have two longbow widows. Yes they seemed a little louder than several of my other bows, but then I have a longer draw and poorer release than most. But tuning them, a little heavier arrow, and splitting a pair of cat whiskers in half with two above and two below took care of any noise or perceived noise I thought I had. And that is with keeping the factory D97 strings.

From: GLF
Date: 25-Feb-21

My PMAX does fine and I haven't changed the string or silencers yet.

From: Frisky
Date: 26-Feb-21

LOL! My goal is to sucker a bunch of Widowers! By the way, my brush buttons will not only quiet a Widda, they'll be affordable.

Joe

From: sqrlgtr

just wonder if those that are thinking the widows are louder are just not used to the arrow hitting the target so quick and are getting that confused with bow noise....

From: Red Dogs Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Good one sqrl! Whether you can get em quiet or not, everyone knows they’re only mediocre performers. Like a Bear

From: Droptine Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 26-Feb-21

All the widows that I have had have been a lot quieter than the bear takedown down I owned. That constant clicking sound on the draw on the bear was hard to get rid of....lol All joking aside I haven’t had much issues with any of the Widows I have had but I sure like that joke!

From: sqrlgtr
Date: 26-Feb-21

wait till I get some of them stealth buttons frisky is talking about, shucks you want even be able to see the bow are bow arm much less hear it....

From: MCS
Date: 26-Feb-21

I just put new strings on my PSA V and my PCH. The new strings both have yarn wraps where they contact the limbs and boy it makes all the difference in the world also a low strand string count can be quieter.

From: sqrlgtr
Date: 26-Feb-21

MCS,glad you mentioned the yarn warps I always forget to mention them and they do make a world of difference in the noise from string slap.....on any recurve bow...

From: Scooby-doo
Date: 26-Feb-21

Widows are historically have have not been considered quiet, but they can be quieted down. The strings from them have always been terrible, the last few years somehwat better but still not good. Brace has to set perfect and I found in the 20 or so Widows I have owned that string slap was mostly the issue. I wrap the string or put a bot of velcro on the limb where the string makes contact. I have to agree with the folks who say they are noisy but also have to say they can be made as quiet as most any other recurve out there. Shawn

From: KyPhil
Date: 26-Feb-21

I put a B50 string on mine and its as quiet as any bow made. If thats the case then it leads to the string material. The stock D97 string material is not quietest matwrial. 450+ was a quieter material over D97. I also use cat whuskers which i think are better than the spider silencers they have.

From: reb
Date: 26-Feb-21

Brace height , cat whiskers and B55 or 450 plus.

From: static
Date: 26-Feb-21

Yep, 450plus and different serving material and amount of serving w/ cat whiskers seem to be the best remedy for me. Yes, there are other bowyers w/ better sound reduction recurves.

From: Joe2Crow

“noisy widows” - isn’t that a little redundant?

From: Steve P

But, can't you get $20 for a "barrel full of them"? ;-)

all the deer i've taken with my widow have never complained of hearing the arrow coming although a time or two after i miss they sure are jumpy!

From: TrapperKayak

How would you know if your 'widow' is noisey????

From: Josh H Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 26-Feb-21

The new to me widow I just got seemed loud.

I put on a10 ring string with yarn wraps and yarn silencers and it made all the difference in the world-

Added a little felt to where the string touches the tips and it is really quiet- better than my blacktail for sure.

I’ve had 4 widows and never had a problem. They make more of a thud than a twang I guess is how I would explain it. Good String and tuning is a must but that’s any bow.

From: Desperado
Date: 26-Feb-21

I am with you cut it out. All 3 of my Widows are very quiet.

Show me a guy with a noisy Widow (or any other brand with a good string) and I'll show you someone that doesn't understand how to tune a bow& arrow. :)

All the Blackwidows that I own are just as quiet as my others bows. Actually the BlackWidow recurves might be more quiet than some of my others.

From: bowhunt

Most the problem is with archers with really Baaad releases.

Trapper, I’m assuming when I’m gone, she won’t change.:-)

From: Boker

I have only had one black widow 62” PMA and it was a sweet bow. I had heard all the rumors of them being noisy but I found with the sane tuning process I do with all my bows it was no louder to me than any other bow I have shot.

If I get the money someday I’ll order a brand new black widow.

From: grizz

I assume Frisky’s brush buttons will strongly resemble Buick hub caps. And cost about 20 dollars a barrel.

Bodymanbowyer I don't have it yet. Four more months plus a week or so.
