I didnt make it past the eye thing he started with. If I look through a hole and close my right eye, nothing happens, if I close my left eye I loose the picture. So I`m suppose to shoot left handed? Ive been shooting right handed for 50 years, bows and guns. Maybe I`m a freak of nature!

@Mike - a lot of guys learned to shoot cross dominant and have adjusted. Especially those older guys who attended Catholic schools.
My brother shoots cross, but he is able to close his left eye and shoots 3U.
I’m unable to close just my left eye with looking like Popeye, so I’m lucky that I’m as strongly right-handed as I am right-eyed....

When I was 10 yrs old and my dad got me a wood longbow, no one was around to get pointers from, it was just trial and error, hit the bale of hay. I shoot split, both eyes open, and I dont sight the arrow. Maybe explains why I dont see the arrow when I shoot?

Well, you DO see it, of course, but that’s not where your conscious attention is....
Question is, are you happy with your shooting?
My brother was always a pretty good wing-shot, until he got a custom-built SXS that puts the rib under his left eye.
(Ever seen anyone get 7 doves on 5 shells before???)
If you’re happy with your shooting, don’t change a thing.
If you are right handed AND you know that you are tuned properly AND you have some R/L impact issues, you are probably triangulating your windage a bit and would probably reduce those issues if you could refine your anchor such that your nock is consistently in the same plane as your point, your right eye, and your target.
So all you would need to do is to re-train your anchor point (which you can do without ever loosing a shot) so that your right eye gets better info about where your hand/arrow is pointed while your left eye keeps telling your right hand what to point at.
Which is all there ever has been to it.

Before the new age trad era no one ever thought about or mentioned eye dominance. I' a left eye dominant person and shoot right handed with no problems.

I think when someone does a video or something similar that is meant to be instructional, they should make it clear from the "git go" that what they are describing is what works for them
I don't think I've ever seen or read anything that is instructional that I completely agreed with. And it doesn't matter who produces it.

Great video and i liked his approach at giving suggestions as well as showing some common form issues. He covered many of the topics that beginning shooters can benefit from seeing applied.

Closing one eye isnt a big deal. Some people say they have a bad time but most people can do it just fine with a little practice.
I have a weak eye dominance, it can switch if the right eye is partially blocked - even the riser can do this. So I just close my left eye. When I dont sometimes my shot shifts to the left.

Hello Everyone, I asked Mark (the Fellow in the Video) about his arrow length? His arrow length is on purpose and serves a function when hunting which he plans to explain in the next video. You Guys are sure keen eyed! I probably should have mentioned something about the arrow length when I filmed it. Have a great day, brian

.. surprised that all others who followed MikeT's response failed to pick up on this ...
MIKET - You indeed should shoot right-handed, as your right eye is your master eye. It is the eye where the image does NOT disappear that is controlling or motor motions. You're good to go!

Many archers who gap and use the arrow tip for a sighting reference use a longer arrow to get their point on distance closer to where most of their hunting shots are. Cutting the arrow shorter increases the point on too much.

I`m confused by this eye thing. So its the eye that you close, so I close my right eye, nothing happens, close my left eye I loose the picture.??
I thought it was a good video, has some good pointers. It does look like his arrows are 6inches too long, but maybe he sights with the point and it works for him.

Mike, as Lefty explained. When testing, if you leave your right eye open then close the left and the sight picture goes unchanged then you are right eye dominant. If you close your right eye and leave the left open and you loose the picture that confirms right eye dominance.

This isn't that hard folks. Eye dominance is nothing new, and has literally been discussed here hundreds of times...as well as other forums I'm sure.
Also, you will adapt to cross dominance shooting if you want to. I can shoot either way, no closing eyes, but it took a bit to get comfortable and let the process become automatic. It will become automatic but you have to put in the effort and practice. The worst thing about changing sides from R to L or vice versa, is the feel thing more than anything else. That of course applies to me and how I manage. You may be comfortable right away or many take longer. If you're shooting well though, don't screw with it.

Ya so if I close my right eye, left eye open, I dont loose the picture. So I am left eye dominant. This kinda bums me out a little, but I`m not about to change at this point of my life.

To take the video's dominant eye test one step further is a method I use on people to determine eye dominance. Like the video, look at a single point of reference through the hole your hands they have created. THEN, slowly bring your hands back towards your face keeping the object within the hole in your hands. The closer your hands come to your face and keeping the object "in the hole", your hands (hole) will naturally come to your dominant eye.

MikeT- I'm confused because you've stated-
"so I close my right eye, nothing happens, close my left eye I loose the picture"
and
"I close my right eye, left eye open, I dont loose the picture"

Lefty thanks for the pm, I got to read your 2nd from last pm but my pm feature quit working again and I couldnt read the last one. That was a little mind boggling for me, at 64 I guess I can except that at times. I shoot pretty good with both eyes open, I`m not gonna win the Lancaster Classic barebow though. Its all about having fun, and I really enjoy shooting even on a off day.
