John, not serious my friend, July you would need a bee suit and tennis racket. Lots of those around here and it seems this past year was a big one for white faced hornets.

But then, I’m not allergic....

Make sure it's empty is an understatement, when I lived in AZ I heard about a snow bird that picked up some choia cactus skeleton , took it back to MN it got good and warm and he had a whole batch of baby scorpions to play with in the house .

When I was about 16 a nest formed on one of our bedroom windows. As it grew, we could watch them like an ant farm. They caught houseflies and stored them inside.

I picked one up as a kid that my grandpa had knock down in his yard . It was small and had laid there a couple days. After inspection I determined no bees were in sight. My parents needed to make a trip to town about the same time so I being the boy I was took it with us Unknown to them. I was correct that it was free of bees but I overlooked the snake that had made it his new home. Yeah my parents weren’t to happy with me.

I've had a White Faced Hornet's nest around my property for probably 12 of the 15 years we've been in our house. They are one of the best species to have around unless you are a bee keeper. If you have a White Face nest around you won't have to worry about Yellow Jackets or any other species of stinging wasps that like to make nests around your house because the White Faces hunt them down.
Do a Google search on White Face hornets, some pretty neat info. Also, do a Google search on removing White Face hornets and prepare to read some real horror stories. I had a nest in a pine tree in our yard several years ago that was about chest high. Needless to say I didn't mow about a 20 yard circle around that tree all summer, thought I was going to have to bale it when fall rolled around.
Nice find John, it will look great in your man cave!

How one little animal can cause so much pain is unreal.....had a neighbor blow up his garage and came near to killing himself once. We didn't know he had sucked up a whole nest worth in his shop vac. He asked what would kill them. My uncle said, "gasoline, aint no getting up and stinging you after that"...he went home and sucked gas up in the vac. When it hit the brushes BOOM!!!!! Blew the entire garage door off and he had to be flown out.

Pretty sure they become accustomed to people at a distance. Had a huge one above our kids swing set one summer. We had never even noticed the hornets flying around and the kids were always playing there. Of course once we knew they were there they had to go. So sprayed them at night , made the mistake of leaving my shop lights on and the door open. The ones that escaped went to the light.

Dad, back in the 50's, said..."don't bother them, they kill flies"..so we left them alone. I never got stung by one and we've always had them around the area, and one year they built a nest under the eaves of our roof. A few years back I missed sealing up a hole under the front edge of our front door and the yellow jackets built a substantial nest. They were in and out all day long during spring and summer and you could go in and out of the door with no problem. The bonus there was no salesmen bothered stopping once they saw the activity. You just don't want to start any chit with them.

I have a friend who has several. His first he brought into his shop and when it warmed up the hornets started coming out. After that when he got one he put it in a garbage bag and sprayed wasp killer in it. Then he would close it up and let it set for a few days before taking it out. Lots safer that way.

I had a few that I'd collected and gave to my son when we moved.
My first one was from PA that I found on our first group bow hunting trip there. I can't remember if it was Sept. or Oct. but at any rate I put it in the room my buddy and I shared at the Inn where we were all staying. Needless to say once the nest warmed up the bees started coming out. I took it out asap and put in in the back of my buddy's pick-up cap where they settled down in the colder air. He was a bit upset but all was well. Eventually the sustained winter cold back home did them in and I hung it in our living room by the 1720's beehive oven.
After that experience whenever I found a nest and cut it down, always in colder weather, I'd hold the entrance hole on the nest by the running exhaust of my truck for awhile and never had another angry bee issue.

I was 12 & my cousin RIck was 10, we took .22s & bicycles & went to the river, hunting squirrels....found no squirrels, so shot up a nest like this one halfway high in a tree. we were 30? 40? yards out, and when we saw the black cloud coming out of it, started running like crazy, I hollered at little RIck "don't look back just don't stop" we ran at least a 1/4 mile back to the road & bikes. no stings, done for the day. I wouldn't admit to being related to the uncle that told someone to suck up gasoline into his shop vac. duh! :) Hornet stings are like someone sticking a red hot needle into your skin. I mowed over a nest in the ground and found that out.

Agree with the beekeepers above. My dad has had bees for over 40 years, hornets are vodoo around his place! Although I don't personally believe that the hornets have ever hurt his bee's, sure couldn't tell it by the honey production!

I went up to our hunt camp a couple years ago for a weekend getaway. When I arrived at the camp, I noticed a 1’ x 2’ piece of styrofoam laying on the ground by the end of the camp. We’ve never really had troubles with bears.... maybe some bear prints on the window sills or on the door but this styrofoam had definite bear claw marks long the edges. The only place we had exposed styrofoam was under the camp, ..the under neath or the camp was all insulated with I” styroboard. Well,.. I got on my knees and had a look. BIG mistake...the bear had ripped most of the yellow jackets nest away from between the styrofoam and under-floor. I’m not really sure how many times I got hit but I could barely see for the rest of the weekend my face and neck were so swollen. Like said above,...just like hot needles and the pain lasted a long time. I would like to have had a video of the bear tearing that nest apart. LOL

My brother and I were trout fishing a remote little stream in the Catskills of NY. We had to crouch down and slowly sneak up on those little native fish cause they were gone in a flash from a shadow or anything. So Im about 40 yards from him and we are both crouched down inching our way closer to the edge. All of the sudden I hear a big splash and a bunch of yelling only to see my brother sitting in the stream waving his arms around. He stepped on a ground hornets nest while sneaking in! Man did they light him up!!!

Years ago we rented a half duplex with the landlord living next door. There was a huge hornet nest at the roof peak on our side. My oldest son had made a blow gun and got pretty good with it. He made darts from a paper cone with a finish nail for a tip. He peppered that nest whenever he could and eventually it was covered with those darts. The landlady called an exterminator who asked where the nest was and when he saw it the look on his face was priceless...he had never seen one like that before!

Two works of Vancouver art on my porch here in Maine; a Chek-Mate, and a carving from the 1950's by a Native artist named Billy Robertson, from a place called Kingcome Inlet.

We don't need big fancy rooms with trophy mounts. just stuff that shows we like to hunt. I love it. Keep it coming. As Batman says. Pics Pleeeze.
