Do most of you use the traditional style like zwickeys and others? On the other hand how about steel force rwo blade with bleeders or without. I'm talking for deer. After leaving the compound scene I've only used zwickeys and magnus that I have to sharpen.

From: Crow#2

When shooting the compound i started out using thunder head 100 but they just don't seem right for my traditional bows.Steel force maybe.

When I went back the recurve I also shot Thunderheads. I switched to Razorcaps which I love. But they don't make them anymore and I'm almost out of the supply I have. When that happens I'll probably go to the Wensel Woodsman which is very similar.

I use all different kinds of broadheads depending on my mood.

3 blade Muzzy, Grizzly, Hunters Heads, I don't use broadheads as a fashion statement.

WW, Eskimos, are the ones in my quiver.

Razorheads or woodsman

I used Zwickeys again this season. Ive had great results with them, grizzly single bevel, and stingers. I can get all of them very sharp and they perform well. But if it ain't broke i often try to fix it, so will be playing w VPA 3 blades this summer.

From: Crow#2

How many grains would you think sharpening two blade zwickeys would remove

From: fdp

10.

From: Crow#2

That would be good.

From: Crow#2

The German Yager look good and 160 gr. If I can get them down to 150 and sharp that would work

My lineup for years and I use 160 gr Snuffers for Turkey and Bear

From: Yellah Nocks

I am using the Tusker 125 grain Spirit head. Double bevel using the staysharp angle jig. Gets them very very sharp. At my poundage(40) I will not be using 3 blade heads which I really prefer as they seem to resist planing and are ridiculously easy to sharpen. But the Tuskers should be fine. I like that they are a straight edge and not convex. Also accurate weights.

Stealthy. The second head from the left..what make is it and how well do you like it compared to the others in the pic. ? Thanks

Woodsman screw on are a toss up on spinning straight. I have several and I hate them. Two blade for me. JF

Crow#2, pretty sure that is a Pearson deadhead. Those have not been made in years. I saw your post about how much weight is removed with sharping, my expireance is very little. That said I have ground out the belly to straight and ground as much from the back and lightened them 10 grains.

From: Desperado

Daryl...It is a Pearson Deadhead and I love the way they shoot but.....find it very, very hard to get them sharp and have tried everything !!!! I am a diehard Bear Greenie fan but like the Deadheads if I could get them sharp !!! Ask Ron LaClair what he thinks of them !!!!As always, be safe !!!!Des

I use woodies so I always use at radio so tho head. Woodsmans, ACE, zwickeys and magnus and grizzlys. All are good imo. I just like to try new stuff so that’s only reason I have them all.

I went back to shooting trad equipment in 1988. The next 5 deer I killed with Thunderhead 100s.

All I`ll ever use. Bears biggest mistake was to quit making these

From: George D. Stout
Date: 21-Feb-21

I've shot the same ones now since 1965...well more or less excluding a year or two. Bear Razorheads have never failed me (I don't shoot posts or rocks with them) and they are easy to sharpen and hold an edge...easy to bring to very sharp in the field. I have used Ace, Ribtek (one year) and even Rocky Mtn Razors circa 1978. Razorheads are still on my hunting arrows. You can throw all kinds of money at broadheads nowadays but they all do the same thing.

Strickland single bevel broadheads.

I agree with George on this one. They are hard to beat. I have a friend that kills deer with different broadheads each year. I asked him why he switches knowing what he uses works if a good shot is made. None work if a bad shot is made. He couldn't answer me. But he is a tinkerer.

From: yeager

Like George, I have only used the old Bear Razorheads.......they have always worked great for me.

Babysaph, the answer is simple, it's because he wants to.

From: lostaro

I'm a broadhead junkie...I've shot all kinds over the years and it isn't odd for me to have 3 different heads in my quiver at the same time. The majority of my deer kills have been with Zwickey Deltas, Snuffers and Bear SuperRazorheads...I really like the SRazorheads but have to admit, they aren't as tough as I'd like. Have had a few come apart on deer...luckily the deer were recovered but the thought of a head folding up isn't comforting.

There are so many great solid steel heads out these days I don't think I'll shoot anything with an aluminum ferrule...The VPA heads are unbelievably tough and I have one Zwickey Delta that's killed 7 deer...don't see that with many replaceable heads.

Shoot what flies well and you can keep sharp...almost any will work if you do your part.

From: WindWalker

I do have Mangus Stingers with the cutouts but prefer the solid Magnus Stinger Killer Bee type broadhead blade. I have had a few experiences with cutout type broads sometimes slightly buzzing downrange. I also prefer two-bladed broadheads for ease of sharpening.

For years of have used the Lanksy-type carbide sharpener with great success. After I sharpen the blades I gently strop them on an old all-leather pants belt that has been treated with honing oil. The broadheads are deadly sharp. I have had a couple of to- the-bone cuts on a finger to attest to that.

From: SuperK

I have used many different broad heads since the 1970's but I keep coming back to Zwickeys. Love the steel in them, tuff , and easy to get'em sharp with just a file. The only problem I have deciding which one to use!

From: GLF
Date: 21-Feb-21

If you can get them sharp enough you can't beat Ace or Zwickey heads ,but otherwise thunderheads are hard to beat.

From: Casekiska

"...thunderheads are hard to beat." Ditto. Ditto. Ditto!

Anyone remember these?

Missile Spike was a POS. Little Shaver used replaceable injector shaving blades. I did drop a doe with a "Shaver" but one of the injector blades came out and I had to search for it in the meat.

Found a box labeled $10 at a local archery shop couple years ago. In it were 12 Eskimos, Hot melt, 4 dozen 2216 broadhead adapters, fletchtite, and some random field points.

I've had the Bears for a while, never installed the bleeders, they're still in a box.

From: smitty Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

try a bunch of them whatever will fly the best on your arrows is the one, then learn how to sharpen that one

From: Mike E

If you're using aluminum or carbon shafts 125gr. Thunderheads have have been a tried and true BH for longer period of time than more than a few out there .

From: todd Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 25-Feb-21

I have used zwickey and Magnus in passed. Used Ace broadhead long time and probably to easiest to resharpen of any heads out there. I have used grizzly which is great too. But about 8 years ago, a buddy gave me a Tuffhead to try. I used that same head to zip through 2 deer, a turkey and hog. So been using them ever since. The one biggest benefit of a quality traditional head, is that you will loose it long before it will break or wear out. I and others here for sure have heads that have taken well over 20 pieces of game. Now that is an investment. Put your money in quality arrow shafts and broadheads and increase your success rate by 75%.

From: GLF

160 thunderheads came out a year before 125's which came out around 1984 or 5. I stocked 4 cases of them and sold out.
