I have some pieces of ERC boards that I would like to glue up and make a bow.My question is " hows ERC under compression"? If I back the bow with Rawhide, will it handle compression as a belly wood?

There were lots of hickory backed Cedar bows made in years past.
I personally have never made one.

Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow typically has high quality backing strips as well.

Thanks FDP I will look into that. I am in Canada and most backings like Hickory I have to get from the U.S.

You can get Hickory at the Hardwood store in Dartmouth.

Runner maybe so but I would need backing . Hickory boards are no problem but backing is.

You can use hickory as a backing, as noted above. It also makes a good self-bow without backing. Sturdy, though not very fast.

Its horrible under compression and prone to explosion. Look over the boards you want to use very closely. Pick the best grain and the cleanest boards with few or no knots of any sort. You will have to use a hard backer; hickory, maple, bamboo. Rawhide alone wont do anything except keep the explosion less violent. Wear safety glasses when you start drawing it by hand. Bed careful.

Thanks Pearl Drums. Thats what I was worried about. I probably will not bother. I was given the Cedar flooring a few years ago. I thought I would ask the experts on here . Its beautiful wood . I may use it for something else. Thanks all.

If you don't want to make an all wood bow with it grind it into lamination and make a glass bow with it.

Hickory backings are just slices of a board.
Many people say ERC is good in compression. In the past hickory backed cedar was considered the next best thing to yew. YMMV

I have found the branches are much better and more dense. Odds are high these boards are milled from large logs and very soft and brittle.

Backed with white oak. Shot well for couple days. Then BOOM for no reason. Won't wast my time again, unless handles or tips. John
