Hey guys, I have made a bunch of bows including Osage bows. I am not a novice but have experienced something for the first time. My bottom limb did not take the curve I heated like the top did. I always heat pretty early on when the wood is thick. This time it didn’t come out right. It’s not too bad but I like perfect when I can get it. My question is, can I reheat and add to the bend? Will that weaken the wood? Thanks in advance!

Never been a problem for me, I almost always have to heat more than once. Just be careful with splinters lifting if not enough wood to remove them. You didn't mention heat source but I take it your using a gun. I've use gun/boiling both on same limb to get desired curve. I personally seem to have better luck with boiling for bend setting bend with heat gun then using gun for minor corrections of curve. Just don't seem to lift as many splinters this way. Sorry too much information I'm sure. Just what seems to work for me.

Thanks for the input sir. Yes I use a heat gun. I always wipe the section I’m gonna heat down with olive oil. Seems to keep it from drying out too much.

There are times when I just can’t get Osage to take heat the way I want it to. Don’t know why. Yes I often reheat the same area. Eric have you witnessed some Osage just not wanting to move with heat applied. Other times it almost jumps in place with the heat gun. Arvin

In my opinion the biggest contributor to osage not staying put is the time and depth of the heat session. You can make it hotter than hale quickly, but that doesn't get through the wood. Go slower, move the gun back away from the wood and let it work through the thickness. It'll stay put.

Thanks Pearl next time that happens I’ll try it . Matter of fact I have just the bow blank. Real dense and real thin early wood. Did not want to move and I set it aside. Arvin

Arvin, I have a osage self bow you made for me about 5-6 years ago. I'v never shot it because of a rotator cuff injury that occured about the same time. I want to shoot it now. Its been setting in some fairly dry air since then. What should I do... if anything before shooting it? thanks

Just string it and exercise it a bit and go for it. Should not be a problem . Arvin

I don't heat anything until after long string tillering so that the wood is thin enough to bend easily. Jawge
