I'm starting another recurve build and was gonna stain the veneers...there curly maple. What kind of stain should I use? Does it affect the bond? I'm using ea40.

Thanks-Jeb

I like using alcohol aniline dyes for that. Doesn't add moisture or warp the lams like water based dyes can, and doesn't affect adherence like oil based stains or dyes can. The last one I did was also curly maple in a recurve. I dyed them a light rose color for a young lady.

I haven't done it, but from my own furniture building I'd agree with Jeff. Just test it first, it can get real dark real fast.

I’ve used water based stains. On thin veneer sometimes it warps and twists but it seems things straighten out in press.

I tried an oil based stain once and it came apart within 200 shots!

I've never built a glass bow, but if I wanted to stain lams for one I would use alcohol based, no question. Feibings leather dye is awesome stuff. Dries almost instantly and wont deform the thinnest material.

I have used alcohol-based stain. Work just fine. It was a little camouflage of a sort over natural action boo. Green brown and black. Nemah has been doing it quite a bit lately.JF

I use Transtint liquid dyes in isopropyl alcohol. Look at some you-tube videos on dying electric guitars. Great info! RKK

I use water base. Works for me.

I'm a fan of the dye pigments as well. I mix in alcohol or water typically.

Alcohol based aniline for me.
