A couple years ago, my brother-in-law, who is (or at least once WAS) about 6 foot four, decided he would like to get back into archery, and I helped to get him set up with a Sage XL.

Now, my nephew/godson is about 6 foot, with a pretty high rating on the gorilla index.

So, for those of you taller/longer draw guys who have investigated the lower end of the price spectrum, what would you suggest for a kid who has outgrown a #35 , 62” Sage?

And FWIW, he just might end up hunting Elk with it. I am thinking maybe a Sage XL or whatever is the current equivalent (assuming that they still make it!) or possibly one of the imported 68”-70” longbows that I’m seeing in the big catalog.

Thoughts??

I draw 30” , as far as budget bows had a 64” samick journey, 60”. Black hunter longbow with the bamboo core limbs ,

Little more pricey bows I had a , bearpaw 58” slick stick, 64” bear Montana, 60” bear 59 kodiak , 60” and 64” super kodiak, 60” and 64” bear TD , 62” black widow

Pointing being bow design and build quality is a bigger factor than just the length of bow for longer draws ,

That 58” bearpaw was smooth as butter

The 64” Samick journey had more stack than about any of these listed

A budget bow I’d like to try is the 64” mesa longbow at 3 rivers m I read good reviews on it.

One last point I found out for myself is to base my draw weight on my draw length.

A light 40lb@28 is more like a 45lb for me. Something to keep in mind if the shooter is weight sensitive.

Maybe just a cheap ILF.

A 68" Farmington Apache longbow @ 68"amo . Well built and accurate. I picked up one off the bay for 150 on sale and with points I had accumulated. Normally 200. Southwest Archery has a 64" Spyder xl recurve for 150 also. Both shoot very well.

I'd get a Black Bear compound riser and a pair of modestly priced medium or long ILF limbs from LAS or somewhere. Remove the ILF fittings and use them as bolt downs.

If you don't want to remove them, send the limbs to me and I'll take out the fittings, fill the hole in the limb with a removable grommet, put lateral limb alignment screws in the limb pockets and send it back to you.

Then in the future he can use any similar type limb he has an interest in using.

I don't know how long his draw might turn out to be, but I have a 30 1/2" draw and shoot 60" Galaxy Ember (aka Black Hunter) with longbow limbs. No stack at my draw and after many years of high dollar customes, I don't feel I have given up anything beside maybe fancy wood. And I actually think the Ember's dark gray and black colors go great in the woods.

Hoyt Rambo or Spectra warfed to ILF, can put on ANY ILF limbs. Angles & geometry on Spectra & Rambo really good for longer draws.

Just move up to heavier limbs for his current riser.

He handed off the Sage to his little brother; the bow is LH and Little bro is Left- handed AND left-eyed, while Big is RH and Left-eyed like their dad.

Good suggestions and a very kind offer there, Frank! Nice to know the Galaxy/Ember is pretty accommodating.:..

I’ll check with my brother and see what he might be planning, but wanted to be able to offer some suggestions that he might not have thought about....

I am right handed and left eye dominant. It caused me no end of problems until a friend took me to the archery range and handed me his wife's left handed bow. I couldn't believe how different it was to be looking right down the arrow at the target. From that day I knew all my right handed bows had to go. I would suggest that the left eyed righty get back to shooting with a left handed bow. I realize there are people who successfully shoot cross dominant, but he should at least give it a try.

There's a vendor on e**y that has a bunch of left hand galaxy risers.

Do you have to order LH limbs to go with that?

If it were me buying, I might talk to Eric at Hitman, just because he's a member at my Club.....

He also stocks ‘em with upgraded cosmetics...

Like Glunt says, you won’t mistake them for a custom up close, but from 10 feet away, they could pass for something at 10 times the price....

Yes galaxy risers require left handed limbs.

I meant to say that left handed risers require LH limbs. :o(

Mine didn't.

Southwest Archery has the Spyder XL, which is basically the same as the Samick Journey, with a few minor atheistic differences in the riser. The limbs will also fit the Sage riser. They also sell Longbow limbs for it, 64 inch. DANNY
