I understand that bcy 450 plus makes a fine string for a shrew bow. mine ch 2 . being that bcy 450 plus is hard to come by what is a good substitute? Id like to start making my own strings and welcome the many years of experience and expertise here. thank in advance folks.

Brownell went out of business so Fury is out. 8125G is an excellent material I’ve been using for years and I know from experience that the Classic Hunter II loves it. Also BCY X99 is a small diameter stiff material that performs very well with no more than 16 strands and thick serving. Past 16 you have a steel cable that is loud and invites hand shock. I use 16 strands of 8125G with .024 Halo for a high performing string with zero creep. I build to exact length for low twist rate or if I want more twist to hold silencers better I build 1/4” longer for a few extra twists.

I find it interesting that some people think a particular bow would need a particular string material !!!!!

I still use 450+ on all of my bows and I have used it ever since my first Super Shrew came with it...it can be found on the big auction site. I have lots of it.

Lots of 450+ from Ebay sellers....who are small business people for the most part.

Well, 60X strings will make you endless loops from it, and there is some bulk 450+ there but not as much as I thought there was. I personally haven't seen a lot of difference between most low stretch but Rick Barbee would be the man to ask for sure.

Bob, I found it interesting also and decided to find out what it was all about. I've read bout the shrew bows and that string material being compatable as far as noise and feel may be speed. I now think it may be the skinny string not the material cept the character of the material's strengh that allows fewer fibers and less weight, diameter ect. off course nothing better then a skilled archer.

X99 or Mercury would be a great choice.

Some years ago we did extensive testing with various different string materials on the Shrew bows. The goal was to have a quiet bow and still have good speed/performance. The 450+ string with 6 strands gave the best results. Later we added 2 strands of B-50 Dacron which further dampened the bow noise without lessening speed/performance.

The strings are basically the same concept with a blend of two different materials. They were tested in a sound lab for best results. The Shrew strings called "Whisper Strings" are available on the Shrew website.

good stuff. I built first string. A bcy mercury 15 strands and 30 total padding. At first I thought the string was not strong enough. the bow was noticably more quite. I want to try to build a 6 strand 450 plus and 2 strands b 50 . Can someone recommend what and how many strands if any is needed for padding ?

I challenged Ron about his skinny about 20 years ago. I still have a bag of other strings that proved him right.

I used 6 stand strings of S4 for many years.
When S4 was no longer available I switched to 450+, and used it at 6 strand for many years.
That was on bows from 70# to 105# of draw weight, and I never had any complaint from either.
