Looking for ideas to make shooting fun for a 5 year old. I'm gifting my son a bow for his 5th bday and shooting at paper is boring for kids. I'm thinking balloons, tin cans, maybe some laminated cardboard discs tied to string. Sending him after our mean rooster *^_^* Stuff like that. I welcome more ideas!

Balloons are great and mixing in water balloons also. Just fill his ears with possitive comments and build his confidence telling him that he can do this and he will excel at archery. Kids pick it up in a hurry and when they are made to believe that they can do it they will do it. Good luck to you both and cuddo's for you for spending time with your boy.

Also you can tape dollar bills to the target. Every one he hits is his and when you get done shooting take him to a quick stop and let him spend his money on his favorite candy.

Try a bamboo garden stake stuck in the ground.

It will help him learn to shoot the line, and he will feel mighty clever every time he hits it.

And a whiffle-type golf ball on a string is a lot of fun, too...

For my Great Nephew, I went to a second hand store and bought some large stuffed animals. I would set them up in the yard like a 3D coarse and let him shoot them when he would come over. He enjoyed it, he was the same age as your boy at that time. DANNY

You don't need anything elaborate. Old plastic coffee cans, pop cans, balloons are good, things that make noise when hit. My granddaughter just loved to shoot with Pap and any target was fun for her.

Rubber blunts and an old basketball. Every hit moves the ball and makes a loud thump. Judos and tennis balls are fun also but may be to small to start with. Whenever I go to the range I bring both . Everyone agrees it’s more fun than punching paper. It’s all about having fun, right?

I hung a two liter bottle from a tree limb and gave my grandsons a few flu-flu's to shoot. They had fun. We shot balloons first like already mentioned. Balloons were a big hit.

Half and full gallon jugs are awesome targets hanging from a string. With a kids bow you'll rarely get complete pass throughs. Frank

Those whistling arrows are a big hit usually

I had 3 of my grand kids come over to shoot bows a couple of years ago. I had a 4'x8' sheet of plywood and I covered it with balloons. They had a blast and didn't take a break till they popped every last one. wpab

Rubber blunts and empty gallons milk jugs make a lot of noise and jump when hit to reinforce the youngsters' shooting. Great fun. Even for us oldies.

Get a can of great stuff foam and fill used water bottles with it. Give it a day to cure and then hide them like Easter eggs. Find them then shoot them.

Make a Tic Tac Toe board to shoot at with a sheet of cardboard (using a backstop of course)

Clay bird targets and balloons. Give him a visual cue when he hits what he is aiming at.

DO NOT SHOOT AT BALLS WITH A BOW!!!!

The arrow can come back at you faster than you can blink!

Be careful with rubber blunts and basketballs. They have a way of coming back at ya. Balloons are always a hit, can be filled with baby powder or dollar bills. My son loved shooting old stuffed animals.

Exploding clays have orange powder or you can make your own with flour and hot melt glue.

At our club tournaments, we would buy a table full of small prizes. Write the prize on a slip of paper, and insert the paper into a balloon. When the kid popped a balloon, they got the named prize. The enthusiasm was sky-high.
