I have a sinew backed Osage bow with Grumly type brushgauards . No idea the age but the Osage is closer to black than brown. I got it from. 70 yrd , He said his Grandpa had it. A few years ago I shot it but I wore my chainsaw helmet and chaps and would slowly increase the bend with a stringer every day until it was bending to brace. It shot well. It’s been several years since I’ve done it. My question is should I put something on it? Replenish the wood? Arrowchucker out

It likely won't hurt it to keep it from drying out. But it may already have spar or something similar on it. Spar Varnish was a pretty popular finish.

Bone some Bee's wax into it .Natural water proofing.

If it’s not sealed with a varnish. I like Odies Oil products. Wax’s and Oils. I’ve sealed new bows with Odies and man does it bring out the details of the grain.

One of my first bows. I was intimidated by this knot and left more Wood around it then necessary, but I don’t have much experience. The picture is to show how nice Odies products work.

Has anyone tried 'Formby's Tung Oil'?

Heck, do they even still make the stuff?

I've used FormbY's many times on bows as well as arrows.

I would wipe 4-5 coats of Johnsons paste wax on it considering we don't know what's on it now. You cant replenish the wood, nor keep it from getting to dry or too "wet". What you can do is seal the sinew backing up the best you can. The goal is to keep immediate moisture off it like rain/snow/heavy dew, not ambient moisture.

Tung oil is not a good water proofing and it dries out disappearing from the wood .

If you aren't concerned about making it waterproof, Tung Oil will be a finish that won't harm anything. Just put it on very thin. It will soak into the raw wood but can be wiped off of a hard finish. They used is in WW2 for the M1 stock finish.

You have to consider that the bow surely has some sort of finish on it already.

Ditto for Odies. That is some excellent stuff however glue does not adhere to it well
