How do vanes work with fix blade heads Shooting off the shelf. These trad vanes Tell me about them.

From: fdp

Folks been shooting vanes off the shelf with fixed blade heads for 60 years or more.

It's all about tuning and nothing else.

Check out Rick Barbee’s Youtube video on how he does it.

Doesn’t Rick prefer an elevated rest?

In principle, if you are tuned to where there’s no contact, you could fletch with stainless steel without issue, so I don’t know if there has been any real potential for improvement or not. I just have to confess an ingrained bias against fake feathers.... But I do have a half-dozen all ready for a Rainy Day.... They shoot real well out of the Thunderbird...

Try cock feather in when using vanes off the shelf, it works !!

Tradvanes is an oxymoron. There. I said it. It can be done though. And done well. Kenny Malloy showed me that. He used to blister my Ace whenever I’d shoot with him. He used vanes and a rest.

Asking about the trad vanes that are new

From: fdp
Date: 26-Nov-20

I think everyone knows you are talking about the new vanes. But that doesn't change anything.

All the methods to obtain clearance are still the same.

Some folks rave about them, others don't. Just like every everything else.

The Tradvanes are a new vane compound that is extremely soft making them one of, if not the easiest to tune for flight off a shelf.

From: Supernaut

The "trad vanes" shoot just like feathers off the shelf for me. Only way you'll know if you like them is to try them. Best of luck to you!

From: George D. Stout

You can make any vane clear the shelf or rest. Most folks who do shoot off the shelf use a raised spot on the shelf, so it really is a raised rest for minimum contact. The arrow, if spined correctly for you, will clear if it's setup to clear the vanes. The "Trad Vanes" supposedly lets you ignore tuning for clearance but they are also the price of feathers. I can buy soft vanes for $12.00 a hundred. Rick shows how to do it in his video.

The Trad vanes DO NOT let you ignore tuning. Nobody with half a brain has ever claimed that. There may be softer ones out there, but I've never seen them.

I prefer Bohning Impulse vanes 4-3" or 3-4" but so many choices...

The new trad vanes fly great off the shelf for me. My fixed blade Zwickeys shoot the same as target points. No elavated rest. No raised spot. No nothin.

I don't typically hunt in the rain but I have the vane fletched arrows with me on southern hog hunts. We hunt rain or shine.

i recent bought a Bear Mag TD that had a bear weather rest on it and thought well, lets see !! Took some 1816 eastons with 2 inch vanes and uni nocks . After a little bit of tuning for the right clearance and point weight (125 gr.) FLY LIKE DARTS!!!!!! My first experience with vanes, yes I know not off the shelf!!! But I'm sure with the newer softer vanes should be no problem, granted I believe that turnable nocks will HELP a great deal...Just my 2 cents " Pick A Spot"

Paul Shafer and many others shot vanes out of their recurve bows many years ago guys.

I realize that the new vanes are supposed to allow for something new, but fact is they don't.

Not knocking the product, just pointing out the end result isn't new.

If you can achieve vane clearance it won't make any difference. And that is not always easy.

I got properly chastised for pointing out that the dude responsible for tradvanes is now using a raised rest. You can shoot any vane off a raised rest. I have one bow with a rest and shoot blazers of it with no issues. You can save frustration and money, tradvanes are expensive, by putting a stick on rest.

Some shelves need some bump/hump on them, but an elevated rest is not necessary as long as you get a good tune, that gives you complete fletching clearance at pass.

Your feathers will even shoot better, and will not wear if you achieve the above mentioned tune, and in my opinion is how they should always be tuned regardless of fletching preference.

I have always wanted to use vanes. they are much quitter then feathers. I do my best to keep my bow and arrow noise down. I use heavy arrows and heavy broad heads. I file my nocks so they stay on the string, but don't make that noise coming off the string. I put mole skin or val crow on the limbs tips. I wrap the string lops with yarn. My bow is as quite as I can get it. Now if I can get vans to fly of the shelf, well I would vary happy, to say the least. I will work on that over the winter. Then maybe I can see how they do when I am woodchuck hunting this summer. God Bless, Good Luck and Good hunting. Buckhunter

So, when you are fletching your arrows with vanes are all of you using a strait clamp vs. R or L wing clamp?

I fletch all my arrows regardless of whether I am using vanes or feathers right-wing offset.
