After taking numerous deer and one 402 class elk, I decided to shoot traditional. Wanted to take a deer with a bow I made my self. Well I went from the time I started traditional three years ago without taking any big game animal. Well at age 73 I had a great experience. I struggled for three year, shot a few thousand arrows, broke numerous bow I made. I nearly gave up and went back to the compound numerous time. I just managed to hang in there. I guess if there are bowhunters that are discouraged, don't give up. You will have the same experience that I had of watching an arrow shot from a bow that maybe you made go clear to the fletching in the vitals of a nice deer whether a buck or doe. The selfbow was just my goal. Do not want to make a big deal out of that, because there are so many good quality bow out there to use and I enjoy them also.

Dang Clay That’s a sweet buck know matter what you got it with.

Congratulations and so glad you hung in there. I know that feeling of letting that arrow fly from your own equipment. It really just can’t be described. It flipped a switch in me that I never knew was there.

Once again so happy for you.

I know the feeling. I remember my 1st with my 1st self made Osage selfbow 9 years ago. Such a great feeling I made the switch 100%. Putting the finish on my 14th bow now.

Congratulations on your success, both with making your bow, and also for shooting a very nice buck with it.

Welcome to the club.

I started with traditional back in the 1970's. I had no success and got discouraged. Traded my beautiful DH bow for a banjo. Picked up a compound and continued. About 3 year ago I had pastor in our church that make a few self bows. He seemed to know a little about tillering and layout so we cut a white ash tree down and tried to make some bows. Mine was great for a while then broke. I decided to continue to try to make one. Meet a guy on Stickbow that wanted to sell some stave. He found out he had ALS and was not going to be able to use the staves. I bought them and Trevor was his name, and I became friends. At least as good of friendship you can have over the internet. Trevor was such a great guy. He loved Jesus and know where he is today. That is such a comfort to me. Of the three staves I bought one turned out. Not because they were bad stave, but because I was a bad bowyer. That stave is in the picture. I'm greatful for this site, it has helped me and all the guys have encouraged me. I have never been on any site where guys are so willing to help and answer questions. Thanks to you all and have a happy blessed holiday season. Clay

Beautiful bow and more beautiful story of your friendship with Trevor. Those are things that impact our lives so much more than any inanimate object. Well done on the deer as well and I know somewhat of the feeling of taking that first one with a selfbow. Mine was in 1992 when I was 46 years old. Congratulations and Merry Christmas.
