Anyone else struggle with draw arm shoulder/neck pain? Mine comes on sudden and hurts so bad I can barely sleep without lots of pain killers.

No particular trauma as a cause, just flares up now and then. Hurts like hell. Shooting is out of the question for a while.

No, I actually sleep on my left side so it's just the opposite.

Jus -

What makes you sure it's archery related? Problem is it could be anything from overuse to a cervical nerve injury. Could be some thing you did to it years ago and age brought out the symptoms.

If it doesn't resolve with the usual, conservative management, you know the drill, get off the Internet and see a doctor. Asking about other people's seemingly similar injuries usually has no bearing on yours.

Viper out.

I get neck pain the next day buy nothing like you described. But I believe I make it worst using this IPad, head usually bent forward.

Take Viper's advice ... make an appointment with a reputable orthapedic doctor!

My string shoulder acts up. I think it is from tugging on self bow strings in the tillering process, and shooting for all those years. Plus being 72 doesn't help. A few years back I had surgery for trigger finger, and carpel tunnel that I think came from the same thing. See a doctor if you are in that kind of pain.Mine is not that severe yet.

If it's that much pain why haven't you gone to a Doctor. These web site Dr. are ok for bows and arrows but I don't think they qualify for a medical Dr.

"Anyone else struggle with draw arm shoulder/neck pain?"

Yes, and what am I doing about it, is also I believe in your question.

At about turning 70 I have been focusing my workouts to strengthening my shoulders. I do believe my efforts have made a difference and reduced my "down time/pain". What I've found is that certain flare ups are due to accidental injury or muscle strain. I have confidence in what I've learned I can do for myself. It takes discipline, a willingness to modify habit and research, to move towards my goal of wellness.

I can't imagine the intensity or cause of your pain, nor should I, or you. Where is the pain, why and how is it brought on? A doctor will ask you these questions also. If you need a doctors help in exploring these basic questions, by all means do so. Some things need their expertise.

What you do for yourself is a lifelong challenge that affects your wellness.

Yeah, I did a visit with my chiropractor with little relief. Guess I'll try some stretch band therapy for awhile before I bite the bullet and see an MD.

I get the same thing from time to time but I usually know it’s coming from over doing it at the range. I just back off on my shooting and it gradually goes away.

Could be shoulder impingement. MRI only way to tell.,

Pretty sure the first question a doctor is going to ask you is which shoulder. Anyone giving you advise without that info is ...well, not a doctor.

What would likely do me the most good if I had access to one would be a massage therapist.

I had horrible shoulder pain last year after I got a new bow and shot it for 5 days straight (won't do that again). Went to the doctor and the pain was so bad the Doctor though I had torn my rotator cuff ( could not even use a hammer at work). Turns out I had just given myself a really bad case of Bursitis. Anyway medication and 2 months of no shooting sorted it out.

But from there after finding out how much a torn rotator cuff would cost.

I watched jake kaminski's Utube course and also Tom Clum's solid archery mechanics course. Both great course's, Jake's is free and Tom's is way cheaper than shoulder surgery. And the combination has changed my shooting form dramatically, and improved my shooting. The change in form is way easier on my shoulder.

Also now if I have a big day shooting. I drink turmeric tea. turmeric us a powful natural anti inflammatory. And helps with recovery.

As many have said, see a doctor and get MRI to make sure it is not a torn rotator cuff.

Once you have healed, check on your shooting from to see if that might be causing the pain.

I am only 42 but I have had arm and shoulder pain from shooting trad ,

After seeing guys that can’t shoot any longer due to permanent pain.

I decided it’s worth the ridicule and dropped down in bow weight.

I had a bad flare in my draw shoulder. My good Doc prescribed and xray to see what was up and them physical therapy. There are very specific exercises to loosen and strengthen the rotator cuff muscles that work fine. I shot a long session yesterday with the heaviest bow I have shot in years and no pain today. - lbg

I had that same pain before I learned to use my back muscles instead of arm/shoulder muscles. I couldn’t straighten my head it hurt so bad.
