Time Passes But Promises Do Not...its been 15 years now...Rest Well #728 & All Heros...4finger
Remembering and Paying Homage on Memorial Day... I'd like to respectfully introduce you to #728...7 years ago, with my family, we visited Gettysburg...Among the rows of numbered rocks at Gettysburg...#728 caught my eye- along with something else...an instant bond happened I don't know why or how...BUT...#728 profoundly changed my life that day... I assume that #728 loved God-family- life-freedom...enough to give his life for it...and just guessing...at a young age...The shorted opportunities-experiences- dreams-hunts and Life he gave up...so I could have mine...no words can express my gratitude...same goes for those unknown-untold thousands since time who fight/fought for what's right...God-Freedom-Family...I promised #728 that I wouldn't let him be forgotten...this is the 7th year of that promise...I look forward to shaking his... along with all the others hands one day...right after I hug my Grandpa... Remember Memorial Day... God Bless America...4finger

In our newspaper today (The Charleston Gazette-Mail) is recorded a prayer offered by Lt. Col. Robert Lee Wolverton on the eve of leading his men of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne into the D-Day invasion. Lt. Col. Wolverton's prayer was read by President Ronald Reagan on Omaha Beach on the 40th anniversary of the invasion. "God Almighty, in a few short hours we will be in battle with the enemy. We do not join battle afraid. "We do not ask favor or indulgence but ask that, if You will, use us as your instrument for the right and an aid to returning peace to the world. "We do not know or seek what our fate will be. We ask only this, that if die we must, that we die as men would die, without complaining, without pleading, and safe in the feeling that we have done our best for what we believed was right. "Oh Lord, protect our loved ones and be near us in the fire ahead and with us now as we pray to You." Lt. Col. Wolverton jumped with his men as his plane was leading the battalion's wave across the English Channel. However, he was killed before reaching French soil. His men found him hanging from his parachute harness, his body pierced by more than 150 rounds. Freedom is not free and today we recall the bravery and sacrifice of men such as he and those he led. This account was written by his grandson Lee Wolverton.

My town hosts the largest Memorial Day parade in Connecticut, but not his year. A well intended voluntary precaution, which was warranted for three weeks, has instead, persisted into a "Simon says" tyranny, for too many weeks.
Of my many family members who served, only one was lost to battle. We give to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, because some are still in a battle.
I recently learned a meaning behind the Mexican, Dia de Muertos, Day of the Dead. That is, they believe a person dies three times. Once when they leave their body, again when they are buried, and finally when they are forgotten.
Our war dead are not forgotten and this day is for them all to be remembered, thank God we can.

My thoughts are about my Dad, who served in the Pacific theater. After he survived a near fatal case of dysentery, his Artillery Co was assigned to MacArthur’s Army of Occupation in Japan. He ended up near Hiroshima. His Company was exposed to the radioactive fallout. Years after the men in his Company got back to the States, many of them began to get a variety of Cancers, and dying in their early 40’s. My Dad died of lung cancer in 1969. He lived long enough to come home, get married, have four kids, and die when he was 45. In a way, he died bc of the war, he just didn’t know it.

I watched "The Pacific" HBO series several months ago. Two features Marines were Robert Lee ( who later wrote the book "Helmet for my Pillow"), and Eugene "sledge hammer" Sledge ( who later wrote "The Old Guard, USMC at Pelilu and Okinawa). "The Pacific" was a combo of both books.
I came across an audio recording of Sledge's book on youtube. Excellent listening. Very moving. He became a PhD in biology.

My Dad was a decorated WWII Army Sgt in the ETO (4th ID, 22nd Infantry Regiment: 2 Silver Stars, 2 Bronze Stars with "V", and 2 Purple Hearts, 3 campaign stars). I did a short stint in the Navy. My Dad (now passed on) viewed Memorial Day as the most important holiday, behind Christmas and Easter. He didn't talk much of his combat experience. He would say, "I don't know how or why I made it back home, when so many didn't."
The ultimate sacrifice, made 100,000's of times for us. Today, so many people sadly pay little, or no attention to Memorial Day.

God bless our veterans. My grandpa was captured at Cooregidoor in May of 1942 and spent about 40 months in a Japanese prison camp. From 17 to 21 years old he was tortured and starved. When he finally got home he weighed 92 lbs. He was tough as nails and downright onry and he would make me laugh until the day he passed, and I miss him. My other grandpa was a retired Colonel and I miss him to. My wife’s grandfather was a Pearl Harbor survivor and I miss him to. That really was the greatest generation. It honestly breaks my heart to see folks discrase our flag and our constitution after what all those great men and women have done for us since the beginning of our country. Again God bless all our veterans and thank you all for your service and thank you for our freedom and the sacrifices that you all have made for our country.

It's very humbling to think of those how gave so much. I say thank you, but it seems to fall so short. In our community there were 2 men (brother inlaws) that were serigate grandfathers to us kids. They served in Europe during WWII. My father's best friend lost his only son in Vietnam. My step uncle who laid for days, wounded, in a swamp in Vietnam, and suffered from PTSD the rest of his life. Several men I have worked alongside, that served over there also. A good friend I met shooting skeet that also served there. My son who served in the Marines 4 years. My step daughter that served in the air force for 4 years. I am willing to bet many here on the wall also served. Countless others and their families that have sacrificed so much, I humbly say thank you. Tonight I raise my glass to you all. wpab

I'd like to take the moment to remember 3 buddies. I think of them every day and see their passing every night. They gave all and left behind a lot. I was supposed to be in the truck with them that night. But our LT had other plans for me. They were great guys and one day we'll meet up to go on the hunt we were planning early that day, but a huge IED had different plans. Sadly I couldn't get off mission to send off my friends. The CO felt I was better off staying behind a long gun for the next few days. Thankfully another buddy got me a pic as they were being loaded for their angel flight home. You'll never be forgotten boys.

I'm making a 150 mile drive tomorrow to visit two cemeteries where my Gt-gt-grandparents are buried. Both fought in the Civil War.
One was the bugler in Company H, 8th Missouri Cavalry and was wounded in action in the battle of Little Rock. I even have copies of his pension papers.
The other was `enlisted in F company, 21st Infantry Regiment of North Carolina. He was listed as AWOL on 30 September 1864. I have never found any information as to whether he was captured, paroled, wounded, or just said enough and left.
Both families wound up living just two households apart in the SW Missouri hills.
It took me a few years of research to find these two and I won't let them be forgotten.

Great post. A sincere thank you to all who gave it all. It’s upsetting to see how people abuse their freedoms when they have done absolutely nothing to earn them. Freedom for sure is and was not free. There are countless heroes to thank on this day. Mine is Pat Tillman. I’m looking forward to meeting him.

Wow tears in my eyes from some of the pictures. We should never forget its so easy too that it didn't effect some of us directly.
I was 36 # in the draft and had high blood pressure and was getting called back the day of the physical. I was the only one who didn't go to Nam out of all my buddy's that day we went down and the very next day they stopped the draft.
I was always resentful not getting to go but as I aged I realized just how terrible and how I was protected. And that those who did go in my place protected me.
I wanted to enlist but father didn't want it and wanted me in our his body shop and paid me well while I was in his shop he said not to go. I did resent him for it I wanted to be with my friends when they went.
I always wanted to be a gun boat Capt. and learned that the first thing that was shot for to destroy. Maybe God had the plans that it took me years to understand and realize.
Men and women lost their lives and family's were destroyed by lose of life so we could be safe. Let us never forget the fallen and those who served for our country. Help those who are in harms way as we speak to be safe and to be protected Lord please. They are all your children as well as their earthly parents children who wonder and worry each day for them.
Lord protect our service people at home or any corner of this world as well as those who served and come home .

To so many that have went before us so that we may enjoy the freedom we have today. It's ashame that so many of the younger generation have no idea what scarifices those of the 1940's and that 1960-1970's gave. Maybe if they had an idea they would stand for the flag when the National Athem is played. God Bless those who gave their all. R.I.P.
