Maybe a stretch of rules although I'd say all bowhunters are wildlife enthusiasts.I got this today can't decide on ID.Its BIG for a downy thought maybe eaglette.Lean8ng toward red shouldered hawk? Any biologists on here?

Maybe an Osprey? I can identify most adults but downy chicks are out of my league.

Baby Eagle is what I would bet on.

fdp DNR calls me.Its very large we can't decide if eagle or not.

Looks like fledging is underway, so maybe he’s near grown?

At least there are some markings starting to develop on the tail…

Just hope it doesn’t imprint on people; I don’t really see a lot of point in rehabbing an animal that’s never going back to the wild unless it’s going into a teaching collection somehow…

I know it sounds cold and heartless, but it’s just so expensive to nurse them back and you think what those dollars could do elsewhere…

And just for context, I worked for a time at the University of Minnesota Vet School where they had the raptor rehab program...

Redtail Hawk

BTW - Not to start anything but hope you're a licensed raptor rehabilitator or falconer,,, if not ALL native Birds of Prey are federally protected and illegal to possess… Ya may want to contact your area raptor rehabilitator… Just saying….

I'm a Veterinarian of 35years and a licensed federal wildlife rehabilitator of 31 years.Got it.

GF I've talked with Reddig(sp) and have his books. All the cost of the wildlife stuff I do gratis.Much of what you said is 5rue.

From: Kodiak
Date: 20-May-20

Definitely a hawk, I'd guess RedTailed.

Not an eagle.

Way cool 4nolz, did not know you are a Veterinarian... Now know where to ask for pet medical advise... (just joking..8^))

Not big enough at that age with perching training feathers and the down is too white to be an eagle... Am kinda a raptor enthusiast and ironically watching "Eagle Power" running right now on TV's PBS, NOVA program... There's good video footage of young eaglets, PBS will likely run it again or maybe find it OnDemand...

Redtails won't receive their signature tail feathers until after their first molt... Their young training flight tail feathers are greyish in color...

Oops, forgot to ask, ya got more pix?

Thanks

If not known parents, young hawks species of near the same size are hard to identify in the early down stage, until the feathers start sprouting and color and pattern can be seen...

Definitely hawk, not falcon, eagle, owl, or vulture, although could be a species of Kite maybe ... I'll stick with Redtailed now because of size and the odds of abundance, but those feathers are really dark... If Florida, could be a species of Kite... Be interesting to watch it grow... Keep him well, thanks for sharing...

From: Zbone Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 21-May-20

Those feet and talons look too thick to be Kite though...

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 21-May-20

Yeah definitely not a kite.Ive never had a redtail our most common is red shouldered

From: Zbone Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 21-May-20

Ah, yeah then probably a Red Shouldered... Size is right...

Interestingly, my area never seen too many Red Shouldered around here until the past 4 or 5 years have seen a bunch, populations seen to be in the increase...

Cool whatever it might be. What ya feeding it Mike?

From: GF
Date: 21-May-20

@Mike - yep, there’s a special place for those who do it out of love.... and a different kind of special place for those who do it when it will only cause problems later... like bottle-feeding a fawn that is going to grow up to gore a person during rut because it can’t distinguish between 2 legs and 4...

From: 4nolz@work
Date: 21-May-20

Zbone sure does look like it but its really big,is that picture a redtail? Could be, they range here Im sure.Feeding it minced red meat now will change as we go.Its not injured so my role is about done I'll probably transfer to a volunteer.

Those two pix are of Red Shouldered...

the feet/talons are the reason I picked eaglette instead of hawk.

You'll likely know when the tail feathers grow long enough to show the banding... This pic is of immature Red Shouldered, with first year feathering...

First year flight feathers are usually slightly longer than mature feathers with many raptors, training feathers so to speak and sometimes actually look larger than their parents... Many or most species of raptors won't recieve the mature color feathering until after their first molt... Redtails, Red Shouldered, Coopers, Shinny Hawks, as does falcons such as Peregrines and Merlins come to mind... Bald Eagles don't receive their white heads and tails until they're 4 or 5 years old...

Here's another pic of an immature Red Shouldered from the back... Notice, no red feathering on the shoulders or orange banding breast feathers...

There was a young red-tailed that was raised by Bald Eagles a few years ago.

Not sure how he ended up in the nest but he was gritty enough to compete and survive.
