I have only been out a few times for Turkey this year due to work and farm commitments, and even then only able to hunt for around an hour and a half at a time.

I had a chance at a nice bird a couple weeks ago but didn't get to drop the string because I was trying to get it on film, and by the time I got the camera on him the moment had passed.

Unusual year and the activity that I had on my place mostly dried up, with the tracks, signs, and gobbling going away. I decided to give it one last hurrah this morning before work.

I used a single hen and didn't call hardly at all. I was getting a little bored and did a practice draw with each hand, and a hen showed up around 7:30 and quickstepped out of there after checking out the decoy closely.

15 minutes later, this Jake showed up silently. The opening in the blind is something of an elipse, and he was at the far end just standing in full strut moving very slowly, but not at a place where I could shoot or get him on camera. Eventually he got to a spot where I could shoot and get it on camera. I didn't feel comfortable that I was sure where to aim with his angle and being puffed up, so I decided to go or a neck shot. Unfortunately, even though I had an arrow with a DCAP on it next to me, I knew there wasn't enough clearance for the bottom of the window with that big head, because the bird was closer than I anticipated. I just decided to use the Big Jim Big 3 that was loaded and attached to my string tracker. I felt pretty good since he was so close, and it worked out.

That was great. Man I was nervous just watching. It was amazing he just walked off and laid down. It is amazing how bows kill so fast. Not flopping like with a gun. Great video but I would have liked it better if you had some loud head banging music and some guys in the background jumping up and down yelling that you smoked him. LOL. Jk of course and who cares if it was a jake. What an accomplishment. I liked the video quality as well and Kudo's to Jim for helping getting that up. Great video.

Great hunt. I got my first this year, though it was with a shotgun. Next try will be with a bow . . .

Congratulations! Micahel

LOL. That is a cheap discontinued canon camcorder that I plugged into the television and used my cell phone to record off of the television screen. Think I paid 100 bucks for it at walmart.

The blind was a gift from a very good friend. It is a Blackout X5S. A 5 panel blind with good head room and lots of interior space. I hope the walls aren't see through. I just took the mesh down and opened up the window like an elipse shape but pretty far on both sides so I could see well. Just not high enough on the edges for me to feel good about sneaking an arrow through.

If your ok taking a jakes life for food then ok then. As a trophy I don't feel that or just because it was arrow shot.

Early on when not to many turkeys had been shot I was ok with Jakes shooting them.

To me a Jake is a nuisance bird but still gets a walk to grow up. They can screw up a hunt easily at times.

Great hunt and fine job videoing! Turkeys are definitely one of my favorite hunts.

From: pdk25

Or maybe you meant about the see through walls that it looked like I had plenty of room to shoot? Actually, I had the camera at a much higher elevation than I was at while seated, and may have been able to squeeze out another 2 inches higher before the tip of my limb would have hit the blind. Sorry. Sometimes sarcasm eludes me.

From: George D. Stout

That's a fine bird in my mind. I really couldn't care less that it's not a giant old gobbler. That's some good shooting too.

That's OK RymanCat. I usually let them pass, looking for a better bird, but I like to eat them and it isn't like by passing on a Jake you have 5 1/2 yo birds. Most of the 3.5yo birds that I see one year are never seen again. Not gonna say it was a majestical old gobble, but probably the best I was gonna get this year. One bird a year in my area

I don't know about this turkey hunting business. I find them to be stupid birds, easier to take than just buying one in the store. I once had a line of them parade by me, while I sat in a bush by a stump, and several stepped on my foot! Talk about dumb! I suppose Big Jim led me to believe they were wary birds, but I found out they are no challenge for the Last Great Bowhunter. Congratulations on the jake, by the way!

Am not from USA and never grew up where there were any turkeys. If a Jake is a young male turkey, then just how big do they get.Would take that one any day? Nice-turkey seemed suspicious and knew it was his last day. Well done and filmed.
