nearing completion of my latest bow,
but instead of snakeskin or cloth, i decided to go a different route, and went with some beautiful veneers for the back of the bow.
in looking , it seems nobody puts veneers on a board bow, cause everyone keeps saying they have never heard anyone doing it that way LOL
well,here it is.

tomorrow going to hit the veneers lightly with some dark stain, and then wipe it off right away , just to accent these gorgeous veneers.
theres so much beautiful grain that you just cant see in the pictures.

i have not strung it since adding the veneers, as i wouldnt want them to possibly crack since they do not have any finish on them yet.
i would assume it will add a small amount of weight, as they are very thin (like 0.030")
before i clear coat the entire bow, i am going to spray a coat or 2 on the back of the bow only, that way when it dries, i can (in my mind) safely draw the bow without the veneers cracking or lifting.
then i can do a final tiller if it needs it.
and then coat the whole bow :)
ill see if i can get a picture of where i rounded the veneers over into the side of the limb, im pretty impressed with myself LOL

Good luck with that. Your now asking spalted wood with severe grain run off to take all the tension. Glass guys can use that stuff because it's under glass and doing nothing but for looks only. I'd bet some money that breaks. And putting on a couple coats of sealer ain't gonna do a lick in protecting it from cracking btw.

That is beautiful! I also predict big problems with the bow breaking or at least the veneers cracking and maybe splitting or peeling off. For your sake and all the hard work you’ve done, I hope I’m wrong. Please report back on how things have gone after you’ve shot it a 100 times or so.

if it breaks ill merely cut the handle off and epoxy it to another board :)
last bow i made you guys told me the handle would pop off lol but am north of 600 shots on it and it hasnt.
im sure it helps that ive only got a 26" draw haha
i do appreciate the criticism though, even if some of it is kinda harsh lol
but that only makes me do a better job to ensure it works out lol ;)
ive got some more pics ill be putting up for those interested :)

Might be worthwhile to finish the veneers with superglue to stabilize them. Not sure if it would reduce the possibility of grain lifting, but I am sure it wouldn't hurt. Fiberglass cloth an resin as used in making a wood canoe would really secure it.

After you get the finish on the bow, I'd put it on the tiller tree with a rope and pulley to draw it. Having one blow at or near full draw is not a nice experience - don't ask me how I know.... At least that will let you know if it worked without "shootin' yer eye out kid"!

forgive my ignorance,
but why would merely adding the veneers make the bow blow up?
before the veneers it worked just fine, was braced at full brace height and drawn to full draw and held there im sure more than 300 times.

The back of a wood bow stretches and the belly compresses. That veneer isn't simply along for the ride. Buy gluing it to the bow you have now made it a working part of the limb. Its not made to work even the slightest, its made to look pretty under clear glass that is doing all the work. Im not trying to tell you not to think outside the box or experiment. But remember, bows were being made at least 15k years ago. If you haven't seen it before.....well...I would sand the back clean again and just make a solid shooting bow that is tillered well. Add all the bling you want, but dont mess with its bending/working aspects.

A bow with inner bark left on may break for the same reason. It's doing just enough work to localize the sudden change of stress if it pops.

Oh, as far as your handle not popping off? 600 shots is a good weekend at your local shoot, 2000-2500 and you have a solid bow. The advice you're getting is from years of experience and many bows, collectively in the hundreds and thousands. Everything in making self bows has odds to it. Odds are an abrupt fade will hinge, but maybe not. Odds are a too short bow will shoot like a dog and probably break or fret, but maybe not. Odds are a limb working into a glued up handle will pop, but maybe not. Odds are that run off is going to blow, but maybe not. The guys are simply trying to put the odds in your favor. If you are a hunter the last thing you want is a bow to fail you at the wrong time. If youre a target archer the last thing you want is a bow to blow in front of your buddies that you had been bagging to. You dig?

Very nice veneer! There was at least one or two glass composite longbow bowyers that put thin veneers over glass or carbon backs. I did a repair on one for a friend that had lifted grain all over the back. I did not want to touch it but got talked into it... Right or wrong I lightly sanded the back to knock the lifted grain down, then I rubbed super glue into the veneer, waited a day or two..lightly sanded, applied super glue again, lightly sanded and sprayed finish over the repair. I don't remember if I used Krystal or Minwax Spar Urethane for the finish. It's been 5 or 6 years and as far as I know the repair worked.

Don't get upset with the comments. They are meant to be helpfull. I agree with possible failure. But if it stays together we will have a lot of crow to eat! Keep thinking out side the box that what ales life interesting . Arvin
